UN calls for peace for one day

The United Nations chief is calling for a ceasefire in all conflicts worldwide for the International Day of Peace.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon wants combatants to lay down arms for a 24-hour period to mark the day.

Americans await Pope Francis

Americans are gearing up for Pope Francis' first trip to the US this week.

He'll be making stops in Washington, New York, and Philadelphia.

His trip is timed to coincide with the 70th year of the United Nations General Assembly; His Holiness will be addressing the UN during his time in New York.

There's lots of excitement surrounding the Pope's US visit... but some New Yorkers are more worried about the traffic.

Boko Haram Violence Rises, Displaces 1.4 Million Children

The United Nations Children's Fund has said the number of attacks by Boko Haram in northeast Nigeria and neighbouring countries has risen in the past five months - meaning nearly half a million people have had to flee to safety.


That brings the total number of displaced children in the region to 1.4 million.

Boston police identify “Baby Doe”

Police in the US city of Boston say they have identified a little girl
known as "Baby Doe" who was found dead back in June.

The case drew huge attention on social media with a computer generated
image of the girl viewed millions of times online.

US repatriates Chinese businessman on corruption charges

The United States has handed over to China an expatriate businessman accused of corruption.
The repatriation comes just days before the arrival in the US of Chinese President Xi Jinping.  As our US correspondent John Clarke reports, China is demanding the repatriation of even more of its expatriates living in America.

US talks with Russia over Syria role expected to happen 'shortly'

The United States is soon expected to begin military talks with Russia over the ongoing Syrian war and the role the two sides are now playing there.

Speaking on Friday during his visit to London, US Secretary of State John Kerry said a meeting between Moscow and Washington would be an 'important next step'.

Mexican authorities arrest gang leader over missing students


The Mexican government has arrested a cartel leader they believe to have been a key figure in the controversial disappearance of 43 student teachers from the town of Iguala last year. 

Authorities say Giraldo Lopez Astudillo gave the order to have the students killed.

US, Russia to told military-to-military talks on Syria

US and Russian military officials are to hold talks over the deepening crisis in Syria.


The move was announced in London by US Secretary of State John Kerry.


But there's no indication of a face-to-face meeting between Vladimir Putin and President Obama on the issue.
