RWC TO KICK OFF IN ENGLAND

The Rugby World Cup kicks off later (1900 GMT) in London.

Hosts England get the tournament going against Fiji at Twickenham.

Nearly every one of 2.45 million tickets on offer for 48 games has already been sold.

New Zealand are defending champions and favorites.

Swiss authorities approve extradition of former-FIFA vice president

A Uruguayan football official is facing extradition to the US on
charges of corruption. Swiss authorities arrested Eugenio Figueredo in
May along with six other officials from FIFA- football's governing

Wall Street Stocks Slip After Federal Reserve Rate Decision

Stock markets in New York had a choppy day on Thursday after the Federal Reserve announced its decision to leave interest rates unchanged.


The central bank held rates at around zero, amid concerns about the global economy and low inflation at home - but it left open the possibility that rates could still rise later this year, leaving investors uncertain.

Migrants stream into Croatia

Around 9,000 migrants have streamed into Croatia since Wednesday, as borders continue to close across Europe to stem the flow of asylum seekers. 

With the Serbian-Hungarian border now closed, migrants determined to reach the EU's visa-free zone are seeking alternate routes.

Chile earthquake forces evacuations


The 8.3 magnitude earthquake that hit Chile has prompted the evacuation of about 1 million people and has triggered tsunami alerts as far away as California and Hawaii. 

The quake's epicenter was  46 kilometers (29 miles) west of the city of Illapel, and was felt all the way in São Paulo, Brazil, more than 2,100 miles away.

GM pay $900 million to end criminal investigation

General Motors has agreed to pay $900 million to settle a criminal
investigation in connection with faulty ignition switches in a number
of its vehicles.

The automaker has been accused of failing to disclose the problem
which has been linked to the deaths of at least 124 people.

All Eyes On US Federal Reserve Ahead of Interest Rate Decision


The US Federal Reserve is set to announce later on Thursday whether the time has come to start raising interest rates, which have been held near zero for almost seven years.


A decision to hike rates would raise the costs of Americans' mortgages and credit cards, but could also have an impact on global stock markets.

Drones pose a risk to prison security

There were nine attempts to use drones to infiltrate prisons in England and Wales in the first five months of the year according to the group which monitors prisoners, which says the devices are an increasing threat to security.

MOZAMBIQUE CLEARED OF MINES

The last known landmine has been cleared from Mozambique after over twenty years' work clearing them.
