GM pay $900 million to end criminal investigation

General Motors has agreed to pay $900 million to settle a criminal
investigation in connection with faulty ignition switches in a number
of its vehicles.

The automaker has been accused of failing to disclose the problem
which has been linked to the deaths of at least 124 people.

All Eyes On US Federal Reserve Ahead of Interest Rate Decision


The US Federal Reserve is set to announce later on Thursday whether the time has come to start raising interest rates, which have been held near zero for almost seven years.


A decision to hike rates would raise the costs of Americans' mortgages and credit cards, but could also have an impact on global stock markets.

UN condemns coup and detention of leaders in Burkina Faso

The United Nations has condemned the coup in the west African nation
of Burkina Faso.

It comes after Presidential guards in the capital Ouagadougou seized
power and a new leader installed.

There were nine attempts to use drones to infiltrate prisons in England and Wales in the first five months of the year according to the group which monitors prisoners, which says the devices are an increasing threat to security.

UK kills around 330 IS fighters in RAF airstrikes

The UK's Defence Secretary Michael Fallon says around 330 Islamic State militants have been killed by British airstrikes...

Refugees find new routes into Northern Europe

More than 4000 refugees have entered Croatia in the last twenty four hours as borders continue to close across Europe to stem the flow of asylum seekers.

Hungarian police have clashed with crowds of refugees and migrants on the Hungarian-Serbian border firing tear gas and water cannons on Wednesday - a move the United Nations has condemned

With the Serbian-Hungarian border now closed, migrants determined to reach the EU's visa-free zone are seeking alternate routes.

MOZAMBIQUE CLEARED OF MINES

The last known landmine has been cleared from Mozambique after over twenty years' work clearing them.

Around 171 000 have been removed, and it's now thought Mozambique is the first large land mined country to completely clear itself of mines.

The new leader of the UK's Labour Party is under fresh pressure with a donor reportedly offering to support MPs who want to break away to launch a centrist party.

Left-wing leader Jeremy Corbyn has already seen other high-profile Labour donors say they won't back the party under his leadership.

8.3 MAGNITUDE QUAKE STRIKES CHILE

Around a million people have been evacuated and at least five have died after an 8.3 magnitude earthquake in Chile.

Buildings swayed in the capital Santiago and large waves have been reported in some coastal regions.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has addressed the nation on the earthquake and is to travel to affected areas.

It happened just ahead of Chile's national holidays, as thousands traveled to coastal areas.

Australian Asylum Seeker dies after self-immolating

Texas teen arrested over home-made clock invited to White House by Obama

A teenage schoolboy who was arrested by the authorities in Texas after taking a home-made clock to school has been invited to the White House by President Obama.


The parents of 14 year-old Ahmed Mohamed say he was dragged out of his school in handcuffs, simply because he's a Muslim.

American Muslim boy arrested for making an electronic clock

Authorities in the American state of Texas are being accused of Islamophobia, after a Muslim boy was arrested for making a clock as a school project.
