Australian government green lights Syria bombing

Australian combat aircraft could make their first strike on Islamic State forces in Syria within a week now the Australian  government has given the green light to bombing the country.

EU President reveals permanent quotas for 160,000 refugees

European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker has called on EU countries to accept 160,000 refugees under a new quota system to distribute arrivals more fairly.

In his first State of the European Union speech - President Juncker took aim at the reluctance of some member states to accept thousands of asylum seekers arriving from Syria.

Moscow demands explanations from Bulgaria over closed airspace

Moscow lashed out at Bulgaria for refusing to open it airspace for Russian military aircraft en route to Syria. The White House earlier raised concerns over unidentified cargo that is being transported by military aircraft to Damascus, a long-time ally of the Kremlin. BA 777 catches fire at Las Vegas Airport

A British Airways 777 has burst into flames on the runway at Las Vegas International Airport as it prepared to depart for London.


Shocked passengers aboard other planes flying into the airport watched as flames and thick smoke billowed into the air.

Under pressure in the polls, Hillary Clinton apologizes for use of private e-mail server

Hillary Clinton has apologized for using a personal e-mail server when she was Secretary of State.


The front-runner in the race for the Democratic Party's Presidential nomination was speaking just two days after insisting that no apology was necessary.

Kentucky woman jailed over 'gay-marriage refusal', released

A clerk in the US state of Kentucky who was jailed for refusing to issue same sex-marriage licences has been released.

Kim Davis was detained last Thursday after she cited her religious beliefs as reason to ignore a judge's order that she carry out the legal obligations of her role.

As a condition of her release, Davis, who has refused to resign from her job, cannot interfere with other clerks issuing marriage licenses to gay couples.

UN chief calls EU leaders about refugee crisis

The United Nations Secretary-General has spoken to the leaders of
seven European countries to discuss the continuing refugee and migrant
crisis.

US Congress begins debate on Iran deal

Key committees of the U.S. Congress are beginning debate on resolutions to approve or disapprove the Iran nuclear agreement are getting under.

The week of political debate in Washingon kicked off with former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney telling an audience of conservatives that the deal is 'madness' and essentially U.S. President Barack Obama capitulating to the Iranian leadership.

Britain's Defence Secretary defends deadly drones strikes, said could be used again

Britain's Defence Secretary  has said the UK will not hesitate to launch more secret drone strikes in Syria after criticism following the targeting and death of two British Islamic State fighters.

Russia dismissed US criticism over military aid to Syria

Russian Foreign Ministry dismissed accusations that Moscow is reinforcing its support for the Syrian President Bashar Assad. It stressed Moscow has always been supplying military assistance and equipment to Syria and will keep helping Damascus fight terrorists.

CAMERON UNDER PRESSURE OVER SYRIA DRONE STRIKE

Britain's opposition Labour Party says the UK government should publish the legal basis for a drone strike in Syria which killed two British militants from the Islamic State.

Prime Minister David Cameron revealed on Monday that the first ever targeted UK drone attack on a Briton had killed the pair.

Mr Cameron says it was an 'act of self defence' as they had been preparing attacks on British soil.

UK MPs have previously voted against taking military action inside Syria.

Hungary could face EU fines for rejecting refugees

The European Commission is set to reveal a proposal to force penalties on EU countries who won't sign up to a quota system to share the protection of refugees.

A quota scheme to resettle more than 160,000 asylum seekers will be unveiled by commission president Jean Claude Juncker on Wednesday but has already seen resistance from countries like Hungary and Slovakia.
