UK, FRANCE ATTEMPT TO BOOST SECURITY AT CALAIS

The UK says it will toughen legislation against landlords who allow illegal immigrants to rent properties, as part of its response to the Calais migrant crisis.

London hopes it will send a message that Britain isn't a 'soft touch' when it comes to asylum.

Dozens of migrants are making nightly attempts to make it into the Channel Tunnel in northern France in an attempt to make it to the UK.

Britain is to pay for 200 extra private security guards, additional fencing and extra security at Calais, where thousands of migrants are camped near the eurotunnel terminal.

Britain and France have also called on the EU to do more to tackle the flow of migrants heading to the continent from Africa and the Middle East.

From the eurotunnel terminal in northern France, our reporter Olly Barratt says the problem won't be solved overnight.
