Iran nuclear deal gets skeptical reception in US Congressional committee

American Secretary of State John Kerry has been defending the controversial Iran nuclear agreement to a skeptical American Congressional committee.

The international deal calls for a lifting of sanctions in exchange for Iran suspending most of its nuclear programme.

Republicans are threatening to reject the deal. Even many Democrats, such as Congressman Eliot Engel, say they don't trust the Iranians either to abide by the agreement, or to use new finances for good purposes.

But Mr Kerry was adamant that this was the best deal possible, with Iran agreeing to eliminate most of its enriched uranium and centrifuges.
He warned that if Congress rejected the deal, Iran could go back to the programme it had before international talks.

NATO stands in solidarity with Turkey

NATO allies meeting for emergency talks in Brussels say they support Turkey's war against ISIS and the global fight against terrorism in all its forms.

So-called article four consultations were invoked by Turkey's new security threats after recent terror attacks by Islamic State and the Kurdish PKK.

Diplomats also discussed Turkey's creation of a safe zone with the United States, which would help push back ISIS from the border.

Bruno Lete from the German Marshall Fund says Turkey's new role in the war on ISIS made it necessary to hold the talks.
