US unemployment claims fall to four-decade low

American unemployment claims have fallen to the lowest they've been in
over four decades — according to a report by the Labor Department on
Thursday.

The report indicates a strengthening labor market, but economists say
jobs numbers are volatile in the summer months.

US negotiators grilled over Iran nuclear deal

US negotiators allowed themselves to be 'fleeced' by Iran in the Vienna nuclear talks, according a leading US lawmaker.

The criticism was directed at Secretary of State John Kerry during a congressional hearing about the recent deal.

In his opening, the Republican chairman of the US Senate's Foreign Relations committee Bob Corker was highly critical of the agreement with Iran.

Family of hanged African American motorist reject mental health claims by authorities

The mystery surrounding the death of a Texas woman in a police cell continues, with new questions about her mental state.

EU accuses hollywood studios of monopolising pay-tv

The European Union has accused the UK's Sky TV and six major Hollywood studios of breaking EU competition rules by blocking access to movie content in EU countries.

An 18-month investigation is now beginning into licensing agreements between the film studios and Sky, as well as other European broadcasters.

Nikkei announces agreement to buy Financial Times

The Japanese media group Nikkei has announced it will buy the UK's Financial Times from publishers Pearson PLC.


The offer has been made for 160 billion yen, the equivalent to 1.30 billion dollars.

Anzac Day Terror Plot : 15 year old boy pleads

A 15 year old boy in Britain has pleaded guilty to inciting terrorism at Australia's Anzac Day parade.


The charge involved encouraging the murder of police officers during the event in Melbourne in April, no attack ever took place.

US MacArthur Foundation leaves Russia citing pressure from authorities

The US based civil society organisation The MacArthur Foundation says it is closing its Moscow office after Russia's government put it on a list of undesirable organisations.


Russia has forced foreign funded non-governmental organisations that engage in what it terms, "political activity," to register as, "foreign agents," and the upper house of parliament has approved a, "patriotic stop-list," of undesirable groups.

Greek parliament approves reform package - moves closer to receiving bailout

The Greek parliament has approved a second bailout reform package despite another rebellion inside the ruling Syriza party.

The bill, passed by a wide margin will allow negotiations to begin with creditors who are ready to disburse 89 billion euros in aid to Greece.

Sentencing begins in theater shooting case

Jurors have reconvened to start the sentencing phase in the Aurora theater shooting case in the U.S. state of Colorado.

This comes after jurors last week found 27 year-old James Holmes guilty.

In one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history, Holmes opened fire in a crowded premiere of Batman: The Dark Knight Rises in 2012 — killing 12 people and injuring 70.

Charleston shooter charged with federal hate crimes

Dylann Storm Roof will now be facing 33 charges of violating federal civil rights laws and federal firearms laws.

Plan to shut Guantanamo in "final stages"
