Obama visits Kenya (preview)

President Obama is travelling to Kenya/has arrived in Kenya (travels Thursday evening, arrives Friday EST) for a four day trip Africa.

It's the first time he's visited his father's homeland since taking office and is likely to be the last time he visits the continent as president.

He will be attending the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Nairobi, before going to Ethiopia, as our US correspondent Kate Fisher reports

Sentencing begins in theater shooting case

Charleston shooter charged with federal hate crimes

Dylann Storm Roof will now be facing 33 charges of violating federal civil rights laws and federal firearms laws.

This is in addition to the South Carolina state charges following his shooting of 8 people at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston on June 17

Plan to shut Guantanamo in "final stages"

The Obama Administration is in the final stages of drafting a plan to shut down Guantanamo Bay - that's according to a White House representative.

Some 116 inmates are currently being held at the facility.

2 billion in assets seized from Italian mafia

More than 2.2 billion US dollars in assets have been seized from an Italian mafia group after a series of raids in Southern Calabria.

The group known as "Ndrgangheta" owned thousands of businesses and are said to be behind most of Europe's cocaine trade.

Chinese Authorities Return Passport to Dissident Artist Ai Weiwei

Dissident artist Ai Weiwei (Eye Way-way) has his passport again, more than four years after it was confiscated by Chinese authorities.

Ai is best known for his work designing Beijing’s iconic Birds Next Olympic stadium and for his postmodern, larger than life art installations.

He’s also a government critic with a significant social media following.

Washington Post petitions UN for Rezaian's release from Iran

American newspaper The Washington Post is petitioning the United Nations to help secure the release of its reporter Jason Rezaian, who has been imprisoned in Iran for a year.

The petition accuses the Iranian government of arbitrarily detaining Rezaian, and of abusing him in violation of both international law and Iranian law.

US investigators in Jordan to question uncle of Chatanooga shooting suspect

Police video fuels anger over death of African-American motorist

Police in the American state of Texas have released videotape of a traffic stop, amidst controversy about the subsequent death in custody of the motorist.

A coroner ruled that Sandra Bland hanged herself in her jail cell; a conclusion disputed by friends and family.

As the investigation into the death of the 28-year old African-American continues, the new video is being pointed to by activists, concerned about what they see as the disproportionate use of force by police against minority communities.

Turkey Blocks Access To Twitter After Bombing

A court in Turkey temporarily blocked access to Twitter on Wednesday, after prosecutors in the town of Suruc, near the border with Syria, called for a ban.

Suruc was the scene of a deadly suicide attack on Monday, in which 32 people were killed.
