Prison inmate explored tunnels for months before escape

A convicted murderer who was shot and captured after breaking out of a
maximum security facility in New York says he spent months exploring
tunnels under the prison.

David Sweat evaded police detection for over three weeks along with
fellow escapee Richard Matt who was shot and killed by police two days
before Sweat's capture.

Ukrainian film director faces terrorism charges in Crimea

UK terror arrests over plot to attack US military personnel

A 24-year-old man from London has been charged with terrorism offices - with reports he was planning to attack US military personnel in the UK...

Russia puts forward rival MH17 draft

Russia has put forward a rival draft resolution on the investigation into the downing of Malaysia airlines flight MH17 in July 2014 over Russian-backed militant held territory in eastern Ukraine.

Cuba's human rights record under scrutiny as diplomatic relations restored with the US

The US government says it will continue to press Cuba over its human rights record, after the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

After more than half a century of isolation, Cuba has reopened its embassy in Washington DC, and US secretary of State John Kerry will visit Cuba next month.

Critics of the resumption of diplomatic relations say Cuba has a poor human rights record. White House spokesman Josh Earnest says Washington will carefully monitor how Cuba behaves in future.
