U.S. Jobless Claims Hit Highest Level Since February

New applications for U.S. unemployment benefits rose last week to
their highest level since February, signaling a slowdown in the labor
market. The US Labor Department Thursday said applications for
government support rose by 15,000 for the week of July 4, but
economists say overall the labor market is firm.

IMF Lowers Global Growth Forecast for 2015

The International Monetary Fund has lowered its global growth forecast for this year to 3.3%

The IMF says it's mainly due to a temporary slowdown in the US economy and warns of slower conditions in emerging markets.

South Carolina votes for removal of Confederate Flag


The confederate flag that flies on Capitol Grounds in South Carolina could soon be lowered, after the State House of representatives voted for its removal.

It's presence became the subject of renewed controversy after photographs of a man accused of murdering several black people in a Charleston church last month, showed him brandishing the rebel flag.

London Tube Strike Causes Travel Chaos

The whole of the London Underground network, known as the tube, has been closed down due to industrial action by workers over a pay dispute.


Londoners haven't seen a strike like this since 2002. And the British Government estimates the daily cost of a Tube shut down is more than 50 million pounds.

Greek businesses suffer under capital controls

While the Greek government is submitting a fresh set of proposals to its international creditors in Brussels to discuss at a European Union summit Sunday , the banks remain closed until Monday.

If a deal isn't signed it could force Greece out of the single currency euro.

People in Greece or only able to access 60 euro per day under capital controls and many businesses say they are already being crippled by the current economic climate.

Iffi is a butcher at the central meat market in Athens and says he is terrified his business will have to fold.

Inquiry into historic child sex abuse allegations opens in London


An independent inquiry into allegations of child sex abuse involving senior British public figures has opened in London. 

New Zealand judge, Justice Lowell Goddard opened the inquiry by explaining how it will work and estimating it will take five years to complete.   

The independent inquiry was first announced by the British government in July of last year, following claims of a historic high-level cover-up of child sex abuse involving public figures, including politicians. 

There is concern that Leon Brittan who died earlier this year, failed to investigate these allegations during his time as Home Secretary in the 1980s. 
 
Justice Goddard says the inquiry will investigate past failures by institutions.

Disney Theme Park Removes Cosby Statue

White House says NYSE outage is not "malicious"

The White House says there is no indication that malicious actors are at play in the shut down at the New York Stock Exchange.

It also says there does not appear to be a link between the outage there and technical problems at United Airlines and the Wall Street Journal.

The Trans Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership is taking a step forward following a compromise agreement in the European Parliament.
