BOE GOVERNOR CALLS FOR TOUGHER SENTENCES FOR BANKERS

The Governor of the Bank of England has attacked irresponsible bankers, and is calling for longer prison sentences for those who break the law.

Mark Carney used a major speech in the City of London to criticise a 'culture of impunity'.

And a report by the Bank suggests that maximum sentences for wrongdoing in the industry should be lengthened from 7 to 10 years.

It comes with banks including HSBC threatening to move abroad to avoid Britain's regulatory regime and bank levy on their balance sheets increased by Chancellor George Osborne ahead of May's election.

Political editor at the Financial Times George Parker says there is a game of chicken taking place.

UK TO SELL RBS STAKE DESPITE POTENTIAL LOSS

Britain's finance minister George Osborne is facing criticism for his plans to sell the government's stake in bailed-out bank RBS, at a potential loss.

Mr Osborne has announced he will start selling the taxpayer's shares in Royal Bank of Scotland even though they remain lower than the price paid for them in a £45.5bn ($70bn) bailout in 2008.

He insists the share price will rise as the staged sale of the stake takes place and that the bank and the economy will suffer if the sell-off doesn't start.

And Danny Cox of stockbroker Hargreaves Lansdown believes George Osborne is right.

New York prison escapees may have fled to Vermont

Officials in the state of New York say they have reason to believe two convicted murderers who escaped from prison over the weekend may have headed to the neighboring state of Vermont.

They said police in New York and Vermont are working together to secure the state border.

Authorities say they are pursuing all leads, following the disappearance of Richard Matt and David Sweat, who used power tools to tunnel out of their high security prison in upstate New York.

Officials also confirmed reports that they are investigating a female employee at Clinton Correctional Facility who is known to have friended the inmates, and may have assisted in their escape.

New York state Governor Andrew Cuomo warned that the public should be on alert as the men are considered highly dangerous.

Texas cop's lawyer says he did not target minorities

In the US state of Texas, the attorney for the former police officer seen on video throwing a black teen girl to the ground outside a pool says her client was not targeting minorities.
