Tobacco companies to fight Canadian court ruling


Major tobacco companies have vowed to fight a Canadian court ruling which orders them to pay billions of dollars in health-related damages.


MH17 crash - Russian firm says 'old Buk missile used'

The Russian maker of the Buk air defense missile system says an old missile it used to manufacture brought down Malaysian Airlines flight 17 over Eastern Ukraine last year.  The company also says that the missile is no longer in service with the Russian military but it is in Ukrainian arsenals. United States says Peru's "Shinning Path" is a drug trafficking organization

The U.S. Department of Treasury's sanctions office has designated the Peruvian group, Shining Path, as a narcotics trafficker. 

It also targeted three Shining Path leaders as drug traffickers and frozen their assets in the United States.

Sturgeon warns Cameron about Scottish anger ahead of EU referendum


Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has warned there would be a great deal of anger if Scotland is taken out of the European Union by a UK-wide referendum. 

The leader of the Scottish National Party, which took the vast majority of Scotland's seats in Westminster in the recent General Election, also argued that all four nations in the United Kingdom should agree to withdraw before an EU exit is possible.

Desperate efforts to save passengers in Yangtze River sinking

Desperate efforts are underway in the waters of China's Yangtze River to rescue hundreds of passengers aboard a ship that sank during a cyclone.


Chinese state media reports that 30 people have been rescued….but with nearly 450 passengers and crew aboard, time is running out for anyone still alive on the vessel.

Leaders of Germany, France, European Commission, IMF and ECB meet to discuss Greece

The leaders of the European Commission, the European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund, Germany and France have held an unscheduled meeting to discuss what could be a final offer for Greece in its debt renegotiations.

Athens needs to come to an agreement with its international creditors to unlock a 7 point 2 billion euro slice of bailout money in order to help repay the IMF 1 point 6 billion euro over the course of June.

Russian warplanes make close passes over US ship

Russian warplanes have made several close passes near a US warship in the Black Sea, say the Pentagon.


Russia state media reported that the USS Ross was, "acting aggressively."


The US Department of Defence rejects that, saying the ship is in international waters and performing routine operations.

Frantic rescue efforts underway in China after ship sinks with 450 aboard

Chinese officials say rescuers are trying to reach survivors after a ship with more than 400 people aboard overturned in the Yangtze River.


China's Prime Minister, Li Keqiang, is heading to the scene of the disaster to co-ordinate search and rescue operations.

Massive search underway in China's Yangtze River




A massive search and rescue operation is underway in China's Yangtze River after a ship with with hundreds of people aboard sank during a tropical storm.

US airport security failed in-house tests

The Transportation Safety Administration failed 95 percent of tests run by its in-house Red Team, which pose as passengers trying to bring weapons and bombs on board airplanes.

According to the report by American broadcaster, ABC News, despite spending more than $500 million on baggage screening, the agency's record remains woeful.

UN says human rights violations continue in eastern Ukraine

US hostage released by Yemen's Houthi rebels

An American hostage has been released by Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Journalist Casey Coombs is thought to be one of four US citzens being held by the group - the Obama Administration has not yet revealed their identities.

Yemen has been in the grip of civil war since last September.

White House says Patriot Act expiration affects counter terrorism measures

The White House says the expiration of key provisions of the Patriot Act, which allows for bulk data collection, is impacting counterintelligence operations. 

The US Senate failed to extend the provisions by a deadline of midnight May 31st.

However, White House Spokesperson Josh Earnest would not name specific examples of how the Patriot Act has helped protect the country in the past or say whether American are less safe since the provisions have expired.

Europe's oil & gas giants wants UN, governments to set up carbon pricing system

US admits millions in social welfare payments to former Nazis

American taxpayers have been paying former Nazis millions of dollars in welfare payments according to a government report.
