Massive search underway in China's Yangtze River




A massive search and rescue operation is underway in China's Yangtze River after a ship with with hundreds of people aboard sank during a tropical storm.


The Chinese Prime Minister is heading to the scene, but China's state news agency says only 9 people are believed to have been rescued so far.  (EDS:  WATCH FOR DATING)

US airport security failed in-house tests

The Transportation Safety Administration failed 95 percent of tests run by its in-house Red Team, which pose as passengers trying to bring weapons and bombs on board airplanes.

According to the report by American broadcaster, ABC News, despite spending more than $500 million on baggage screening, the agency's record remains woeful.

UN says human rights violations continue in eastern Ukraine

While there have been relative calm in parts of Ukraine's conflict areas, escalating hostilities and human rights violations continue in eastern Ukraine, according to a new UN report.

The UN monitoring mission in Ukraine is seeing new allegations of killings and torture, with atrocities reportedly committed by both rebel groups and the Ukrainian armed forces.

US hostage released by Yemen's Houthi rebels

An American hostage has been released by Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Journalist Casey Coombs is thought to be one of four US citzens being held by the group - the Obama Administration has not yet revealed their identities.

Yemen has been in the grip of civil war since last September.

White House says Patriot Act expiration affects counter terrorism measures

The White House says the expiration of key provisions of the Patriot Act, which allows for bulk data collection, is impacting counterintelligence operations. 

The US Senate failed to extend the provisions by a deadline of midnight May 31st.

However, White House Spokesperson Josh Earnest would not name specific examples of how the Patriot Act has helped protect the country in the past or say whether American are less safe since the provisions have expired.

Europe's oil & gas giants wants UN, governments to set up carbon pricing system

US admits millions in social welfare payments to former Nazis

American taxpayers have been paying former Nazis millions of dollars in welfare payments according to a government report.

An investigation by the Social Security administration has cast light not only on how many former Nazis came to the United States, but also on a controversial practice used to encourage some to leave again.

Report: US Personal Income Up in April, Consumer Spending Down

Personal income in the U.S. ticked up in April, but consumer spending

UK GOVT DISCUSSES 'BREAKAWAY' WORLD CUP WITH ENGLISH F.A.

Britain's government has signalled it might be willing to support a 'breakaway' football World Cup in response to the corruption scandal at FIFA.

European football governing body UEFA is to meet in Berlin this week, with alternative competitions to FIFA 2018 and 2022 in Russia and Qatar to be discussed.

It follows the arrest of seven senior FIFA officials as part of a US fraud investigation, and an inquiry by Swiss authorities into the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron has called for newly-re-elected FIFA boss Sepp Blatter to step aside.

And his Culture Secretary John Whittingdale MP has confirmed to the House of Commons he has discussed the idea of 'breakaway' World Cups with the boss of England's Football Association, Greg Dyke.

Greek Prime Minister Tsipras says his government could not do more in debt renegotiations

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has written a damning article in French newspaper Le Monde saying his country has been offered absurd proposals from its international creditors and that his government could not do more to reach a deal.

IMF praises Ukraine for reform attempts but more economic pain ahead

Ukraine's economy is to be applauded for struggling forward with reforms, but its economy will shrink more than expected in 2015.
