Top soccer officials arrested in DOJ bribery probe

Several FIFA officials have been arrested in Switzerland over allegations they were involved in bribery worth over $150m.

Swiss authorities detained 7 officials in Zurich following a request from the US Department of Justice.

Why Is the US Taking FIFA Officials To Court?

The charges against FIFA, backed by an FBI investigation, allege widespread corruption over the last two decades, involving bids for World Cups as well as marketing and broadcast deals.

US seeks extradition of FIFA executives, charged with 47 conspiracy-related counts

American prosecutors say they want to bring the FIFA executives arrested in Zurich this morning to trial in the United States.

They face 47 counts of racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering in alleged crimes that stretch back over the last quarter of a century.

FIFA responds to the arrests of 6 of its most senior officials on corruption charges

Football's international governing body, FIFA, says the arrests of 6 top officials on corruption charges in Zurich will be good for the organization to clean up itself operations.

Conceding that it will be a huge hit for the reputation of the governing body, a spokesperson has said Fifa will use the scandal to eradicate corruption from the institution 

Six officials, including Fifa vice president Jeffrey Webb were arrested on suspicion of taking up to 100 million dollars in bribes over the past 2 decades.

The men are expected to the extradited to the US to face corruption charges.

Fifa is holding it's presidential election is set on Friday will Sepp Blatter, who's held the position since 1998, hoping to secure his fifth term.

FIFA's director of communications, Walter de Gregorio defended current president Sepp Blatter, who has not been charged but under whose's leadership the scandal occurred.

Swiss police arrest 6 top FIFA officials at a Zurich hotel

QUEEN'S SPEECH TO SET OUT EU REFERENDUM PLANS

The State Opening of Britain's Parliament later (11.25 BST) will see the Conservative government set out plans for an EU referendum.

The Queen's Speech is the centrepiece of the day's events and the British monarch outlines the legislative agenda of her new government.

It will include a bill for a referendum on the UK's membership of the EU, a vote which Prime Minister David Cameron has promised by 2017.

But the government has backed away from plans to scrap the Human Rights Act, which incorporates the European Convention on Human Rights into UK law.

Russian consul visits two captured Russian, "soldiers," in Ukraine

The Russian consul to Ukraine has visited two Russians captured earlier this month, the TASS news agency reports.


Ukrainian authorities and the men themselves say they are serving Russian soldiers who were on a military intelligence mission for Moscow inside Ukraine.

Senior member of al-Qaeda pleads guilty - US Justice Dept

The U.S. Justice Department says Saddiq al-Abbadi has pled guilty to charges to providing material support to al Qaeda and plotting to kill American soldiers.

The 40-year-old Yemeni was extradicted from Saudi Arabia to face charges in the United States.

White House expresses confidence in Iraqi army as battle for Ramadi begins

The White House is expressing confidence in Iraq's armed forces, just 24 hours after US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter accused them of lacking the "will to fight".

As attempts are made to retake the city of Ramada from Islamic State control, a spokesman for President Obama said the US believes that the Iraqi army "can perform well on the battlefield".

UN expert says Syria humanitarian crisis "staggering" but only 18% funded

The situation in Syria has turned into the world's largest displacement crisis, according to a UN human rights expert returning from the country.

Chaloka Beyani, the UN Special Rapporteur for the internally displaced, is pressing for urgent and coordinated response from Damascus and international aid agencies.

The UN says seven-point-six million Syrians are now displaced while funding for humanitarian aid is only at a fraction of what's needed.

Tornado causes devastation in Mexico and Texas

Hundreds of homes have been ripped apart and at least 13 people have died in Mexico's Coahuila state following a tornado.

Another 8 are confirmed dead and 12 are missing in the United States. 

President Barack Obama has spoken with Texas Governor Greg Abbott and assured him he could count on help from the federal government as the state recovers from deadly floods.

Half of world will be online by year's end

By the end of 2015, just about half of the world's population will be online - according to a new report from a United Nation's body.

The International Telecommunication Union says some 3.2 billion people will be using the internet by the end of the year - and about 2 billion of those people are located in the developing world.

US Supreme Court to reconsider one person one vote
