EIGHT CHARGED OVER LONDON JEWELLERY HEIST

Eight men have been charged with plotting one of Britain's biggest ever jewellery heists.

The men are appearing at court in London on Thursday.

56 safety deposit boxes were stolen during a well-planned raid on London's Hatton Garden jewellery district last month.

It's thought jewellery worth around $300 million was stolen.

Palmyra falls to IS amid fears over ancient ruins

Islamic State has seized control of the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra, and there are now grave concerns for the future of 2,000 year-old ruins there.


IS fighters have been destroying antiquities in other parts of Syria and Iraq.

Nebraska moves toward abolishing the death penalty

Capital punishment is legal in 32 American states and still permitted in federal cases as well.

Obama says climate change poses global threat

US President Barack Obama says climate change will impact every country on the planet and is a serious threat to U.S. national security.

Speaking at the US Coast Guard Academy in the state of Connecticut, the President said the world must reduce its carbon emissions immediately. 

He said the science is clear - climate change is happening.

PayPal Accused of Deception, Agrees to Pay $25 Million in Fines and Compensation

The online payment service PayPal has agreed to pay 25 million US dollars in fines and compensation, after being accused of deceiving its customers. 

The company has offered to settle the case, without admitting wrongdoing.

US planes flying "non-stop" over Ramadi

US officials say American planes are now flying "non-stop" over the Iraqi city of Ramadi, which fell to Islamic State last weekend.


The Iraqi government has asked Washington to provide additional weaponry as ground forces prepare to try and retake the city.

North Korea Cancels UN Chief Ban Ki-moon's Visit

North Korea abruptly cancelled a visit by UN Secretary General Ban
Ki-moon, hours before he was expected to tour an industrial park that
South Korea jointly operates with the North. Ban's trip to promote
peace was called off, just as Pyongyang laid claims that they have
developed advanced nuclear warheads.

Banks Pay $5.7bn, Plead Guilty to Foreign Currency Fraud

Five major banks have agreed to pay fines of 5.7 billion dollars in the United States for manipulating foreign currency markets.

JP Morgan Chase, Barclays, Citicorp, the Royal Bank of Scotland and UBS have all made guilty pleas.

BANKS FINED $5.7BN OVER FOREX RIGGING

Five of the world's biggest banks are to pay a total of $5.7bn in fines, for manipulating foreign exchange makets.

Barclays is the bank with the most total penalties.

And the UK's Royal Bank of Scotland has also been hit with a huge fine, while Swiss bank UBS has settled with authorities too.

It follows a year-long investigation into the rigging of foreign exchange markets - through which trillions of dollars flow each day.

China concerned by economic espionage charges

The Chinese government is expressing "strong concern" following news that six Chinese nationals have been charged with stealing high-tech trade secrets in the United States.

China's foreign ministry says it's trying to get more details about the case, while ensuring that the legitimate rights and interests of its citizens are upheld. 

As Malcolm Brown reports, the case reflects concern in the United States about the impact that economic espionage is having.

US intelligence publishes Al Qaeda documents, including bin Laden will

The US government has published, for the first time, Osama bin Laden's will.


The Al Qaeda leader, who was killed by US forces in 2011, recorded two videos….one for his wife, and the other for his father asking for forgiveness for what he called his "shortcomings".


US intelligence has declassified the transcripts, and released a range of other documents seized at bin Laden's compound in Pakistan.

Prince Charles speaking in Northern Ireland


The Prince of Wales, who is in the Republic of Ireland on a historic visit, has said he's been given a profound understanding of how people affected by the Troubles suffered.


The Troubles were a time of conflict in Northern Ireland, which began int he late 1960s and were ended by the Good Friday agreement in 1998.


In 1979, Prince Charles' Great Uncle, Lord Mountbatten, was murdered by the IRA. Later the Prince will visit the village where the incident took place, as our UK Correspondent Natlaie Powell reports…

PRINCE CHARLES SPEAKS OF LOSS OF GREAT UNCLE ON IRELAND VISIT

Britain's Prince Charles's royal visit to Ireland has been continuing with a trip to the village where his great uncle Lord Mountbatten was killed by an IRA bomb in 1979.

It follows an historic meeting yesterday between Charles and the leader of Sinn Fein, Gerry Adams.

That was the first meeting on Irish soil between a British royal and a member of the leadership of Sinn Fein - formerly known as the political wing of the IRA terrorist organisation.

And Prince Charles has been speaking of the 1979 murder of his great uncle.

Iran's Supreme Leader rejects international inspections as nuclear talks resume

Nuclear talks with Iran have suffered a fresh setback, with Iran's Supreme Leader announcing he will not allow international inspectors access to Iranian military sites or scientists.

In comments to top military commanders, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed to resist pressure from the U.S. and other world powers.

The move comes as nuclear negotiators from Iran and six world nations kicked off a fresh round of talks in Vienna.

CBI head warns business to start pro-EU message early ahead of referendum


The head of a leading British business group has urged its members to speak out early in favour or the UK remaining part of the European Union.   

The President of the Confederation of British Industry, Sir Mike Rake, is to tell an annual gathering that there are no credible alternatives to EU membership.  

This comes as the new Conservative government promises to hold an a public referendum on membership by the end of 2017.   From London Catherine Drew reports.

EU migrants quotas unlikely to get off the ground

A European Union plan to relocated refugees through a quota system looks set to be quashed by national governments.

The proposal, launched only last week, is to distribute 20 thousand asylum seekers throughout the EU countries based on each of the 28 member state's GDP and population.

It comes as a reaction to the ongoing migration crisis in the Mediterranean sea.

INDONESIA AND MALAYSIA AGREE TO PROVIDE SHELTER TO MIGRANTS

Indonesia and Malaysia have agreed to give temporary shelter to thousands of migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar who have been stranded at sea.

The United Nations has been calling for action for the migrants stuck on boats in waters around south east Asia with little food and water.

Many are from Myanmar's persecuted Rohinga minority.

Thousands of migrants have been abandoned at sea by people smugglers amid a crackdown on human trafficking routes in the region.

Malaysia's foreign minister Anifah Aman says his country and Indonesia will provide shelter but need international support.

M&S POSTS RISE IN PROFITS

Iconic British retailer Marks and Spencer has announced its first rise in profits in four years.

Underlying profit before tax was up 6.1% to £661.2m ($1.01bn) for the year ending the 28th March.

M&S says its food business had an 'outstanding' year, but other sales disappointed.

Finance expert Henk Potts says there are signs of life in clothing sales - a key area M&S has been trying to reinvigorate.

UK BUSINESS 'NEEDS TO SPEAK OUT' IN FAVOUR OF EU

British businesses need to begin 'speaking out' in favour of the UK remaining in a reformed European Union, according to the influential Confederation of British Industry.

The CBI's president Sir Mike Rake is using its annual dinner to insist there are 'no credible alternatives' to Britain's EU membership.

However, he is also calling for 'ambitious' EU reform.

Prime Minister David Cameron has promised a referendum on EU membership by 2017.
