Investigation underway into deadly US train crash

The investigation into the U.S. train crash which left 8 dead is focussing on the train engineer, Brandon Bostian.

The Amtrak passenger train was clocked at over 100 miles per hour in a zone limited to just 50 miles per hour.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter told reporters, the engineer was injured and declined an initial interview with investigators.

Arrest at White House over "attempted drone flight"

A man has been arrested at the White House after trying to fly a drone over the fence surrounding the building.

UNSC holds emergency meeting on Burundi crisis

CAMERON TO MEET SNP LEADER IN SCOTLAND

UK Prime Minister David Cameron will hold his first face-to-face meeting later (Friday) with Scottish nationalist leader Nicola Sturgeon.

Death toll rises to eight in Amtrak crash

U.S. authorities have raised the death toll to eight in the Amtrak derailment in Philadelphia which has left more than 200 people injured.

The investigation has so far found that the trains was 106 miles per hour at the time of the crash- but the driver claims he has no memory of the accident at all.

Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer says an eighth body pulled from the wreck was found by a dog.

Fourteen people are confirmed dead following an attack on a hotel in Kabul.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the incident, which took the lives of citizens of at least seven different countries, including an American.

As Gulf leaders meet Obama, Iran fires on Singapore-flagged tanker in Gulf

The Pentagon says it's investigating an incident in the Persian Gulf where Iran's Revolutionary Guards fired shots at a Singapore-registered oil tanker.


The incident occurred in international waters.


There were no casualties, and the ship sought sanctuary off the coast of Dubai.

Train engineer is focus of Amtrak crash investigation

The National Transportation Safety Board is putting its focus on talking to Brandon Bostian, the man who was at the controls of Amtrak passenger train 188, which derailed just north of Philadelphia on its way to New York City.

His attorney says his client has a concussion and does not remember the accident.

The NTSB says the train was running at twice the legal limit through a very congested section of track when it crashed.

NTSB Board member Robert Sumwalt says they want to talk to the train engineer as soon as possible.

Seven people died and more than 200 were injured when the packed Amtrak train derailed in Philadelphia, with some passengers still not accounted for.

Dr. Herbert Cushing of Temple University Hospital said he expects the patients his hospital is caring for are expected to fully recover.

A key panel of the U.S. House of Representatives voted to cut funding for Amtrak, America's passenger rail service, raising questions of how the train line is supposed to pay for improvements to its faltering infrastructure.

Pacific and European trade deals with US may be back on track

US trade negotiations with Asia and Europe may be back on track after bitterly divided US lawmakers reached a tentative compromise deal on Capitol Hill on Wednesday.

A series of votes are underway on President Barack Obama's plans to fast-track trade talks under the so-called Trade Promotion Authority- which would give the president power to sign a trade deal without congressional authority.

Britain's anti-EU, anti-immigration party UKIP is embroiled in a major row with itself over who should lead the party following the general election.

Senior party figures are trading personal insults and several key officials are calling for leader Nigel Farage to resign - again.

Terror arrests rise to record levels in UK


British police say the number of terror-related arrests has risen to record levels with nearly 340 people detained in England, Wales and Scotland in the past year. The represents a thirty per cent rise on the previous year. 

Half of those arrests relate to Syria where the Islamic State has established a base.  Scotland Yard said an estimated 700 potential terror suspects have traveled to Syria, with half of those believed to have returned to the UK.    

This comes as Britain's Foreign Office says it's looking into reports that three British teenagers are on the run after escaping from the Islamic State in Iraq.  An Iraqi blogger reported IS are searching for three young British women who are married to militants.   There is speculation these could be the three 16 year old London schoolgirls who traveled to Syria earlier this year.  

Terrorism and security expert Margaret Gilmore told LBC radio how dangerous it is for recruits  to leave ISIS.

Elgin Marbles - Greece will not take legal action

In an unexpected move, Greece has decided against taking legal action to reclaim Elgin Marbles from the British Museum.


It's understood the Marbles were taken 200 years ago by Lord Elgin.

CONFUSION AROUND BURUNDI CONTROL

There's been fighting between rival factions of soldiers in Burundi after a coup was declared, but then denied by the government.

Military officials claim most of the country's capital Bujumbura is under the control of forces loyal to President Pierre Nkurunziza.

However, leaders of the attempted coup insist the city is in their hands.

Unrest started in Burundi after President Nkurunziza announced he would seek a third term in office.

A coup was announced by a former intelligence chief on Wednesday while the President was in Tanzania for talks.

He reportedly remains there in a secret location having been unable to return to Burundi.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, says the UN is watching closely.

Britain's anti-EU, anti-immigration party UKIP is showing signs of implosion just days after a general election in which it secured only one seat.

One of the party's senior officials has launched a stinging criticism of UKIP leader Nigel Farage.

Patrick O'Flynn MEP says Mr Farage has become a 'snarling, thin-skinned, aggressive' man.

And he warns the party is in danger of turning into a 'personality cult' after Nigel Farage resigned as leader last week only to withdraw his resignation.

This as Mr Farage is locked in a row with UKIP's only MP Douglas Carswell over party funding.
