MILIBAND QUITS AS CONSERVATIVES WIN

Ed Miliband has quit as leader of Britain's Labour Party after a dismal general election result.

Labour trails far behind the Conservative Party, which has won an unexpected parliamentary majority.

Prime Minister David Cameron has been meeting with the Queen to be invited to form another government.

Unlike in 2010 he won't need a coalition partner to govern.

Ed Miliband says he is 'truly sorry' he didn't deliver electoral success for Labour, but suggests he won't leave politics.

Counter-terrorism raids underway in Australia's Melbourne

In Australia, a Melbourne suburb has gone into lockdown, a car has been pulled apart, a house has been searched and at least one man has been taken away by police in what are believed to be police counter-terror raids.

CONSERVATIVES WIN UK ELECTION

The Conservative Party appears to be close to winning a majority in the UK's General Election.

Latest projections have the Conservatives winning as many as 329 seats - over the 326 required for a parliamentary majority.

Labour trail far behind - expected to secure around 233 seats.

Russian spacecraft burns up in atmosphere

A Russian spacecraft that spun out of control trying to dock with the International Space Station has burnt up as it re-entered the Earth's atmosphere, according to the country's space agency.


Control of the unmanned cargo ship was lost shortly after it's launch on the 28th of April.

CONSERVATIVES EDGE TOWARDS UK MAJORITY

The Conservative Party appears to be close to winning a majority in the UK's General Election.

Some projections now have the Conservatives winning 325 seats in the House of Commons, an effective majority.

They are comfortably ahead of the opposition Labour Party which is being wiped out in Scotland.

The Scottish National Party is set to send dozens of MPs to Westminster.

Current coalition partners the Liberal Democrats have lost a series of seats, including those of senior cabinet ministers.

San Francisco Task Force Examines Racial and Homophobic Bias in Law Enforcement

Three retired judges will join a task force in San Francisco to look into questions of deep-seated racial and homophobic bias in that city’s police and sheriff’s departments.

African Americans make up about 5 percent of San Francisco’s population and they account for about half of its arrests and jail inmates.

Exit polls released as voting ends in Britain's general election suggest the Conservative Party may have won a significant victory over the opposition Labour Party.

However, with 316 seats predicted for the Conservatives, that would still leave them short of a parliamentary majority.

The exit polling forecasts 239 seats for Labour, 10 for the Liberal Democrats and 58 for Scottish Nationalists the SNP.

In the run-up to the election, polling had shown Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservatives neck and neck with Ed Miliband's Labour.

The exit polls are run jointly by British broadcasters the BBC, SKY and ITN.

Iran review bill moves to the U.S. House

Legislation to review any agreement reached on Iran's nuclear programm is now set for a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives following passage by the U.S. Senate.

The P5+1 - China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, and United States, plus Germany - hope to have a deal hammered out with Iran by the end of June.

Pentagon says first group of anti-IS Syrian fighters has been trained

The Pentagon says it has started training the first group of Syrian fighters battling the Islamic State.

That's according to US defense chief Ashton Carter who says training a 'company size' group of Syrian fighters is part Washington's long-term strategy for fighting IS.

The Pentagon announced its plan to deploy some 1,000 troops to Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey to train the Syrian opposition back in January.

But identifying moderates in the Syrian opposition has proved difficult for the US administration.

Now Ashton Carter says the first group has been trained.

Islamic State allies target conservative blogger, New York police say

The New York Police Department has announced that conservative blogger
Pamela Geller is a target for assassination by groups tied to the
self-proclaimed Islamic State.

This threat announced by the NYPD comes days after a competition in
Texas that Geller helped organize to draw the Prophet Muhammad was
attacked by two gunmen.

Plans to hold an extensive military exercise in parts of the United States have ignited a wave of conspiracy theories and controversy.

The US army says it's "routine training", to maintain a high level of readiness.

US court rules NSA phone record collection illegal

A court in the US says the bulk collection of Americans' telephone records by the National Security Agency is illegal.


It's the first time a top-level court in the US has reviewed the program, which was revealed by .fugitive whistleblower Edward Snowden.
