More arrests, more protests in Baltimore

Law enforcement in Baltimore have made more arrests as peaceful demonstrations got underway after a night of violence.

More than 100 buildings were lit on fire, and two dozen police officers injured as hundreds protested the death of Freddy Gray while in police custody.

Baltimore City police captain John Kowalchuk confirmed the fresh arrests.

Obama condemns Baltimore violence but says America must do some soul-searching

President Obama has condemned those responsible for violence in the US city of Baltimore as "criminals and thugs".

In a heartfelt speech he said that it was not just a problem for the police but that the country as whole needed to do some soul-searching.

Cargo ship seized by Iran was in international waters, says operator

The company which operates a cargo ship seized by Iranian forces says the vessel was in international waters when it was stopped.

The MV Maersk Tigris - a Marshall Islands-flagged cargo ship with 24 crew on board - was on a routine voyage in the Strait of Hormuz.

Cor Radings (pron: COR RAH-dings), a spokesman for the Singapore-based company which operates the ship, says the vessel was forced to a halt.

US Supreme Court appears divided on gay marriage

Campaigners for same sex marriage remain optimistic that the U.S. Supreme Court will rule in their favor, despite divisions revealed among the nine justices during two and one half hours of arguments.

The final ruling is expected at the end of June.

US and Japan will Lead TPP Partners To 'Swift and Successful Conclusion'

US President Barack Obama has said that the US and Japan are aiming to lead negotiations of the Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal to a 'swift and successful conclusion'.

Speaking at a  joint press conference at the White House with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Mr. Obama said the 12 country deal would benefit workers in the US and Japan.

Theater shooting opening arguments present conflicting profiles of killer

Opening arguments in the Colorado theater shooting trial have revealed key information about the case, including the fact that two state-mandated mental evaluations found the defendant to be sane.

Defense lawyers admit that defendant James Holmes is the gunman who walked into a crowded midnight premiere of a Batman movie premiere in 2012, but they argue that he was in the grips of a psychotic episode. Holmes is pleading not guilty by reason of insanity.

Indonesia set to execute nine foreigners

Indonesia's attorney-general says the executions of the nine prisoners convicted on drug-smuggling charges will take place after midnight, local time. 

Two Australians, Four Nigerians, an Indonesian, a Brazilian and a Filipino have also been told they will face the firing squad.

Speaking on Tuesday the mother of Myuran Sukumaran, one of the condemned, begged the Indonesian government to spare her son's life...

Massive chicken producer aims to end use of human antibiotics

One of the world's largest meat producers has announced that it plans to stop using human antibiotics in its US flocks of chickens raised for the dinner table.

The decision by Tyson Foods reflects concerns about antibiotic-resistant infections.

The US-based multinational says it wants to take similar steps in its overseas operations as well.

UN sending $15 million emergency aid to Nepal

PM: Nepal earthquake death toll could hit 10,000

Authorities in Nepal believe the death toll following the recent devastating earthquake could reach ten-thousand.  

The country's prime minister said the numbers of dead and injured in Nepal's more remote regions is still unknown.

Nearly five thousand have been confirmed killed and many more injured in Saturday's 7.8 magnitude quake.  

The UN estimates the disaster is affecting some eight-million people countrywide.

US Navy answers distress call from cargo ship seized by Iran

The US Navy has responded to a distress call from a cargo ship that was fired on by the Iranian Navy in the waters of the Persian Gulf.


The Maersk Tigris and its crew are now being being escorted to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas.

Relatives of prisoners who may be executed within hours for drugs offences in Indonesia have been visited by their families for what could be the final time.

Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran and seven others are due to be executed by firing squad.

Australia has urged Indonesia to delay the execution of its two citizens pending a corruption investigation into their case.

But Jakarta says the executions will go ahead as planned.
