400 MIGRANTS FEARED DROWNED IN MEDITERRANEAN

More than 400 migrants are feared to have drowned after their boat capsized off Libya.

An air and search rescue operation has been launched by Italian authorities after the latest incident in the mediterranean.

The European Union says over 7000 migrants have been rescued in the area since Friday.

The EU says the flow of migrants from north Africa towards Europe via the mediterranean is 'unprecedented'.

OBAMA WARNS IRAN OVER IRAQ FORCES

US President Barack Obama has warned Iran to respect Iraqi sovereignty in the fight against Islamic State militants.

Shi'ite militias backed by Tehran have been playing a growing role against IS forces.

But President Obama says Iranian-backed groups must come under the command of Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi, with whom he has been holding talks in Washington.

Washington has announced an extra $200 million in humanitarian aid to Iraq.

And Iraq's Prime Minister insists his forces have retaken a quarter of territory seized by Islamic State militants.

But Tim Ripley from Jane's Defence Weekly cautions against over-optimism.

UKIP, LIB DEMS PUBLISH MANIFESTOS

In Britain, the Liberal Democrats and the UK Independence Party are launching their manifestos ahead of May 7th's General Election.

The Lib Dems are promising to spend more on education than any other party.

UKIP pledge a boost in defence spending and to employ thousands of former military veterans in security and policing posts.

Both parties are potential coalition partners for Labour or the Conservatives should they fail to secure a parliamentary majority next month.

Rubio condemns White House Cuba decision

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, newly announced candidate to run for the White House, is condemning White House decision to request the removal of Cuba from the state sponsors of terrorism.

Senator Rubio serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee which would vote on the request and is a Cuban American Republican Senator from Florida.

Hundreds of migrants feared drowned off Libyan coast

Around 400 would-be migrants are feared to have drowned off the coast of Libya.

The estimated death toll is based on the testimony of survivors who were picked up by the Italian coast guard.

Carlotta Bellini from Save the Children Italy says the survivors report capsizing 24-hours after departure.

US Senate passes bill to review Iran deal

The US Senate has approved a bill giving Congress the chance to review any nuclear deal and sanctions relief program between Iran and Washington before the White House independently takes action.

A spokesman for the President said he is likely willing to sign the deal.

US no longer deems Cuba "sponsor of terrorism"

The United States is removing Cuba from the list of nations it says sponsor terrorism.

UN Security Council slaps sanctions, arms embargo against Houthi rebel leaders

US promises to help Nigerians in search for Chibok girls

The U.S. is promising it will continue to help Nigeria in the search for the 219 girls from Chibok, kidnapped by Boko Haram one year ago.

US confirms progress being made against Islamic State

The U.S. is confirming that airstrikes and efforts by Iraqi ground forces have "unquestionably inflicted some damage" on the Islamic State.

According to the U.S. military, the Islamic State organization has lost control of about 25 percent of the land and population it had in Iraq, but the situation in Syria remains unchanged.

Atlanta Educators Sentenced to Prison

Sentencing has begun in the cases of ten Atlanta educators convicted of racketeering in a wide ranging public school cheating scandal.

Prosecutors say the educators participated in a conspiracy to inflate student test scores and give a false sense that struggling schools were improving. 

Prosecutors say the educators’ motive was to protect their jobs or win favor from superiors.
