US confirms progress being made against Islamic State

The U.S. is confirming that airstrikes and efforts by Iraqi ground forces have "unquestionably inflicted some damage" on the Islamic State.

According to the U.S. military, the Islamic State organization has lost control of about 25 percent of the land and population it had in Iraq, but the situation in Syria remains unchanged.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest says the situation on the ground is changing:

Atlanta Educators Sentenced to Prison

Sentencing has begun in the cases of ten Atlanta educators convicted of racketeering in a wide ranging public school cheating scandal.

Prosecutors say the educators participated in a conspiracy to inflate student test scores and give a false sense that struggling schools were improving. 

Prosecutors say the educators’ motive was to protect their jobs or win favor from superiors.

Shooter surrenders in controversial Oklahoma police killing

Soul singer Percy Sledge dies at 73

The singer most famous for his love song, "When a man loves a woman" Percy Sledge has died at age 73.

That song, and a dozen more hits, earned the sould singer spots in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well as the Rhythm and Blues Foundation's Career Achievement Award.

GIBRALTAR WARNS OVER EU MEMBERSHIP IF UK EXITS

Gibraltar says it would would want to stay in the European Union even if Britain voted to leave in a future referendum.

Claims of chemical weapons use by Syrian government

There are claims the Syrian government used chemical weapons on its

JP Morgan earnings beat Wall St. estimates

America's largest bank when it comes to assets has released quarterly
earnings coming in better than Wall Street estimates.

JP Morgan Chase reported revenue of $24.8 billion for the first three
months of the year with income up some 12% compared to the previous
year.

Global growth moderate, but risks remain - IMF

The World Economic Outlook is for moderate global growth, but the International Monetary Fund is warning that risks remain, especially in Russia, Brazil and also with the question of the Greek economy.

The IMF, World Bank, and global financial leaders are set to meet in Washington for the twice yearly meetings intended to address global economic questions.

IMF Chief Economist Olivier Blanchard says the global economic forecast is broadly unchanged from last year's moderate forecast.

Conservatives unveil their manifesto, Labour call pledges unfunded

British Prime Minister David Cameron says a future Conservative government will ensure a good life for all hard working people. 

Launching the Conservative's general election manifesto, Mr Cameron said the Tories were the real party for working people.

With just over 3 weeks to go before the ballot, both major parties, Labour and the Conservatives are neck and neck in opinion polls. 

Mr Cameron promised a future Conservative government would eliminate Britain's deficit within the next parliament, promote home ownership and building and cut taxes particularly for those people on minimum wage. 

The Conservative leader said his party needed another five years in office to finish the job.

U.S Senate will challenge President Obama with a vote on Iran bill


In what is considered to be a direct challenge to the White House, a Senate committee will vote Tuesday  on a bill that would give Congress final approval on any nuclear deal with Iran. 

The White House has warned that the approval of such a  bill will be vetoed.

February Eurozone industrial production exceeds expectations

Industrial production in the Eurozone has risen 1.6% since last year - which is twice as high as previously expected.

The boost is believed to be driven by strong German and Spanish retail sales.

British man arrested on return to UK after reportedly trying to cross into Syria

A 21 year old man who was detained in Turkey apparently trying to cross into Islamic State territory in Syria has been arrested on his return to the UK. 

Waheed Ahmed from Rochdale in the north of England was detained in Turkey along with 8 others, including four children, who are all family members.  From London, Catherine Drew reports.

Time is running out for Greece says EU eurozone commissioner

The European Commissioner for the eurozone says time is running out for Greece to settle negotiations with its international creditors.

Greece needs to provide a comprehensive reforms plan to satisfy its lenders in order to unlock a 7.2 billion euro bailout fund and avoid defaulting on its debts.
