South Carolina police officer fired after shooting black man

Protesters have held rallies in South Carolina against the police treatment of African Americans, following the murder of a black man- who was shot in the back by a white police officer. The act was recorded on a cell phone.

The police officer, Michael Slager, has been charged with murder and fired from the police force, while the U.S. federal authorities investigate.

North Charleston police chief, Eddie Driggers, says he has ordered the wearing of body cameras on all officers from now on.

Obama will offer Caribbean nations an alternative to Venezuelan oil

US President Barack Obama is headed to Jamaica Wednesday, where he's expected to encourage the Caribbean to reduce its dependence on Venezuelan oil.

During his visit with the 15-member Caribbean Community and Common Market, CARICOM, the President will discuss alternative sources of energy and seek to boost U.S influence in the region.

Growing number of South Sudanese seeking refuge at U.N. bases

As South Sudan continues to grapple with civil war and food shortages the United Nations say a growing number of people are seeking refuge in their facilities.

US collected data on Americans overseas phone calls for decades - USA Today

The first intelligence program to track data on Americans telephone calls overseas started in the early 1990s, USA Today newspaper reports.

The program was intended to target drug trafficking and  became the model for the post September 11, 2001 surveillance.

Afghan Soldier Opens Fire on US Troops

The US-led military coalition in Afghanistan has said that an American solider has been killed, after an Afghan solider opened fire on troops in Jalalabad.

The area police chief said US soldiers returned fire, killing the assailant.

French far-right party thrown into internal family dispute

France's far-right political party - the Front National - is facing another series of controversy as its leader, Marine le Pen, announces she will oppose the candidacy of her own father for national elections.

Jean-Marie le Pen - the founder of the party - who handed over the reigns to his daughter in 2011, will not receive her support for him to run for the Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur seat in the south of France.

Labour promises new rules for "non-doms"

Royal Dutch Shell and BG Group in $70bn takeover offer

The oil giant Royal Dutch Shell has agreed to buy gas and oil exploration company BG Group in a deal which could create a company worth nearly 300 billion dollars…

BG Group's shared opened up 42 per cent higher on the London Stock Exchange.

Stanford students invent ultra quick-charging battery

Students at Stanford University in California have invented an aluminium battery they claim should be able to charge smartphones in around one minute.

They say it's also longer lasting, safer and cheaper to make than many widely-available commercial batteries.

50 year old Walter Scott was killed after being pulled over because the car he was driving had a broken tail-light.

South Carolina Officer Charged with Murder after Video Surfaces

A South Carolina police officer has been charged with murder after a video surfaced showing him shooting and killing an apparently unarmed black man in the back. 

The shooting comes on the heels of several high profile incidents across the United States that have sparked  a debate over whether U.S. police are too quick to use deadly force, particularly in cases involving black men.

Two 17 year olds from West Yorkshire feared to be travelling to IS territory in Syria

Two British teenagers are feared to be travelling to Islamic State held territory in Syria after leaving from their homes in the north of England.   

The 17 year olds are believed to have flown to Turkey at the end of March.  The families say they are praying for their safe return.

Humanitarian crisis as fighting rages in Yemen

As Yemen descends into all out war, experts are warning that an immense humanitarian disaster is looming, with food and water scarce and medical supplies running out.

Fighting in and around Aden, the port city, has killed at least 540, and injured 2,000 and displaced 100,000, with many more fleeing the violence in the country of 25 million.

At the White House, spokesman Josh Earnest said the U.S. wants all parties, the Houthi rebels and the fighters with al Qaeda ties to lay down their arms and negotiate a political settlement.

Iran deal focuses on nuclear programme, not broader policy

Republican leaders are criticizing the framework deal with Iran on its nuclear program as a  a direct threat to peace and security of the region and the world because Tehran has made it clear that it wants to export the Iranian Revolution.
