Greenpeace Activist on Oil Rig Speaks

The recent decision by the United States government to allow international petroleum giant Shell to resume drilling for oil in the Arctic seas off Alaska brought swift condemnation from environmental groups.

The Greenpeace vessel Esperanza has been shadowing the Shell drilling rig Polar Pioneer for some time, as it has been making its way across the Pacific Ocean to Seattle, in readiness for the summer Arctic drilling season.

Six Greenpeace activists have boarded the Polar Pioneer in an attempt to highlight what they claim is the threat of fossil fuel extraction in the Arctic.

One of the activists, American Citizen Aliyah Field, spoke from a windy Polar Pioneer deck about their situation.

Timetable for Iran sanctions lift undecided

The Obama Administration says it has not yet agreed on a timetable to lift sanctions on Iran, as part of the P5+1 agreement on Tehran's nuclear program.

Last week, it was announced the parties had reached the framework to begin drafting a deal, wherein Iran would greatly reduce its nuclear program in exchange for a lifting of EU and US sanctions.

Iranian representatives have said they expect all sanctions to be lifted when the deal is signed.

But the Obama Administration says they want to phase out sanctions slowly, in order to keep pressure on Iran, and until they see proof Iran is following through on the terms of the deal.

The agreement is meant to be drafted by the end of June.

White House Spokesperson John Earnest said the timeline will be negotiated in coming months.
