SINGAPORE MOURNS LEE KUAN YEW

Singapore has started seven days of national mourning after the death of its founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.

He died at the age of 91.

Mr Lee was Singapore's Prime Minister for 31 years - turning the city-state into a global financial hub and one of the wealthiest nations on earth.

Lord Hurd served in the governments of Margaret Thatcher and John Major between 1979 and 1995 - he says Lee Kuan Yew was an impressive man.

Centre-right party holds off far-right Front National in French local elections

Early results show France's conservative UMP party have held off the country's burgeoning far-right Front National to be the first party in local elections.

The governing socialist party lead by French President Francois Hollande came in third.

Media say he had been at a motor sporting event when the vehicle he was in fell through the ice.

Singapore's 'Founding Father' Dies at 91

Singapore's first and longest serving Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, has died at the age of 91 from severe pneumonia. Lee was named Prime Minister of Singapore in 1959, and stayed in power for over three decades, overseeing the nation's transformation from port city battling poverty, to prosperious business hub.

The man regarded as the founding father of the city state had been suffering from pneumonia since early February.   

Mr Lee led Singapore for 31 years from 1959 and is credited with transforming the small port city into the global financial hub it is today.  He stepped down in 1990 but remained a key force in local and regional politics.  

His son, Lee Hsien Loong is Singapore's current Prime Minister

Iran Nuclear Talks To Resume in Switzerland

Afghan President In US For Talks With Obama

 
US President Barack Obama is hosting his Afghan counterpart this week, as Washington considers whether to cut the number of American troops in Afghanistan to five and a half thousand by the end of this year.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest won't predict how close the U.S. may be to a possible deal in the Iran nuclear negotiations.
