Merkel urges Japan to discuss war past

On a visit to Japan, German chancellor Angela Merkel urged the host nation to follow Germany's example of facing up to its wartime past. 

Japan has faced increased scrutiny in East Asia ahead of the 70th anniversary of its defeat in the second World War.

Obama To Discuss Ukraine with EU Council President


US President Barack Obama is set to hold talks with the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, in Washington later on Monday.

The White House says the pair will discuss the conflict in Ukraine, as well as the fight against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria.

FBI investigates possible ISIS cyber attack on Western websites

The FBI says it's probing the hacking of several American websites over the weekend, by a group or individual claiming to be linked to the Islamic State.

The cyber attacks spread to Europe on Sunday night, but law enforcement agencies have expressed skepticism there are links to the terrorist organization.

British government sells £500 million worth of Lloyds shares

The British government has made £500 million from the sale of shares in Lloyds Banking Group, bought to bail the bank out during the financial crisis.
All the shares have fetched more than the 73.6p average the government paid for them in 2008.

NEMTSOV MURDER INVESTIGATION 'NONSENSE'

A friend and colleague of murdered Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov says suggestions he was killed by Islamists are nonsenical.

Ilya Yashin, co-leader of Nemtsov's political party, has taken to twitter to claim arrests and charges in the case are helpful to the Kremlin which denies any officials were involved in the killing.

Boris Nemtsov was shot near the Kremlin last month.

Two men of Chechen origin have been charged and three others arrested.

Champion dog poisoned at Crufts

Dog lovers are calling for a murder inquiry at the dog show Crufts - after a prize winning Irish Setter died after eating poisoned beef.
He died at home in Belgium the day after leaving the show.

Doping remains "endemic" in cycling, says report

The use of doping in amateur cycling remains endemic - according to the Cycling Independent Reform Commission.

Greece causes a stir before eurozone finance ministers meeting in Brussels

The Greek ministry of finance has raised the possibility of referendum if their plans to renegotiate Greece's debt are rejected by the other countries in the single currency eurozone.

The comments came from Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis ahead of a meeting with his eurozone counterparts in Brussels.

MISSING UK SCHOOLGIRLS 'IN AL RAQQA HOUSE'

Three missing British schoolgirls who traveled to Syria to join the Islamic State are reportedly staying at a house in al Raqqa.

Sky News reports they're thought to be with another British girl at an address in an area under the control of the Islamic State.

This as the parents of the three girls demand an apology from London's Metropolitan Police.

The force had wrongly claimed their families knew a friend of the girls was already in Syria, before the three disappeared.

Professor Eric Grove is an international security analyst - he says it's claimed the girls have now linked up with the friend already inside Syria.

US marks 50 years of civil rights

The Obama administration is renewing the call for opportunity for all Americans on the 50th anniversary of "Bloody Sunday" when the police used deadly force against peaceful demonstrators.

Earlier US President Barack Obama participated in a re-enactment of that march across the bridge in Selma Alabama - with some of the original participants including Representative John Lewis at his side.

Niger and Chad join attacks on Boko Haram in Nigeria

INTRO:  Nigeria's military has confirmed that forces from Niger and Chad have joined the offensive against the Boko Haram extremist group within the border of Nigeria. Ground and air offensives by forces from Niger and Chad have targeted militants in Borno State in North Eastern Nigeria, where suicide bomb attacks have left at least 54 people dead in the past few days. Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie were among the Republican presidential hopefuls who spoke at the Iowa Agriculture Summit in Des Moines on Saturday. New Report Shows Demographics of Islamic State Twitter Users


An analysis of how the Islamic State uses Twitter estimates at least 46 thousand Twitter accounts are held and used by the group’s supporters. 

The study provides a demographic snapshot of the Islamic State's  users on the social networking platform.

Kerry To Discuss Iran Nuclear Talks in Paris

US Secretary of State John Kerry will hold talks with his British, French and German counterparts in Paris on Saturday.
