Barrel bombings in Syria continue, HRW say

According to Human Rights Watch the Syrian government dropped barrel
bombs on hundreds of locations last year.

This comes after a United Nations resolution was passed in February
2014 calling on all parties to end the indiscriminate employment of
weapons in populated areas.

Obama Heads To Miami Amid Immigration Standoff


US President Barack Obama is travelling to Florida to hold a town-hall style meeting on immigration, even as Republicans in Congress are trying to de-fund or block his executive action on the issue.

Fallon confirms military deployment to Ukraine

Britain's Defence Secretary has said the UK is considering further requrests for support from Ukraine but will not be sending combat troops to help Kiev fight pro-Russian rebels.

Michael Fallon confirmed 75 military personnel will be sent to Ukraine in the next few weeks to provide advice and training.   From London, Catherine Drew reports.

FIFA RULES OUT 2022 COMPENSATION

FIFA says it will not compensate football clubs or leagues who will have to rearrange domestic fixtures as a result of the 2022 Qatar World Cup being played in November and December.

A FIFA executive committee will meet next month to ratify a taskforce recommendation that the tournament is moved from the summer to avoid Qatar's searing temperatures at that time of year.

Some domestic leagues and clubs are angry about the disruption this will cause to their seasons.

But while world football's governing body says it will not apologise for the unusual dates, it says it will slightly shorten the tournament.

UK CONFIRMS MILITARY PERSONNEL WILL TRAVEL TO UKRAINE

The UK has confirmed it is sending 75 military personnel to Ukraine to provide advice and training.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon says London is also considering 'further requests' from Kiev for additional support.

But he insists Britain will not send combat troops to the region.

Pro-Russian rebels say they have been pulling back heavy weapons from the front lines in eastern Ukraine, but the government in Kiev has questioned these claims.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron says he will push for more sanctions on Moscow if separatists in Ukraine fail to observe a ceasefire.

Roman Polanski appears in court to face US extradition request

AMNESTY CALLS FOR UN VETO TO BE DROPPED

EU outlines plan gas security following Ukraine crisis

'AMERICAN SNIPER' KILLER FOUND GUILTY

A man's been found guilty of the murder of US Navy Seal Chris Kyle - who wrote the American Sniper memoir which became an Oscar-nominated movie.

Eddie Ray Routh was convicted of fatally shooting Chris Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield at a gun range in Texas in 2013.

He's been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Mr Kyle had been helping veterans deal with combat-related stress and mental illness after retiring from the military himself.

His memoir about his tours of duty in Iraq was turned into a box office hit starring Bradley Cooper.

27 year-old Eddie Ray Routh's lawyers argued he was psychotic at the time of the killings, but the judge read the verdict from a jury which disagreed.

Police say the derailment of a five car commuter train heading to downtown Los Angeles was triggered by a produce truck driver who made a wrong turn.

Yellen Flags Fed. Interest Rate Hikes on 'Meeting By Meeting' Basis

The chair of the US Federal Reserve has described for the first time how the central bank plans to signal an approaching rise in interest rates, which have been near zero since 2008.

No Federal Charges For Zimmerman Over Trayvon Martin Death

Amidst Sexual Harrassment Charges, Head of UN Climate Change Panel (IPCC) steps down

Facing allegations of sexual harassment, the top official of the UN's
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has stepped down.

Alaska legalizes recreational marijuana

The U.S. state of Alaska on Tuesday made it legal to smoke, grow, and own small amounts of marijuana.

It is the third state, after Colorado and Washington, to allow recreational use of the drug.

US Consumer Confidence Slips in February

U.S consumer confidence fell more than forecast in February, as
initial enthusiasm over falling oil prices subsides and consumers
question the strength of the American labor market. The Conference
Board said its consumer attitudes index fell to 96.4 in February, from
an upwardly revised 103.8 in January.
