UN: Afghan civilian casualties rise 22%

United Nations figures show civilian casualties in Afghanistan rose by
22% last year.

The deadliest year on record came ahead of the end of the foreign
combat mission in December.

Nigerian army says 300 Boko Haram militants killed and towns recaptured

INTRO:  Nigerian armed forces say they have killed more than 300 Boko Haram fighters and recaptured 11 towns from the extremists. A Nigerian defence spokesman said the operation lasted for 3 days and included air strikes in the north east of the country. 10 Nigerian soldiers were killed in the operation. Poland to pay over secret CIA prison

The foreign minister of Poland said that his country will pay some 230,000 euros to two terror suspects who were held in a secret CIA prison on Polish soil. 

Earlier in the week, a European Court rejected Poland's appeal of a landmark ruling from last year.

Chelsea Football Club says it is investigating video footage that has emerged which appears to show fans preventing a black man from boarding a Paris Metro train.

Putin calls for Ukrainian solders to surrender

ECB meets to discuss Greek bank funding.

The European Central Bank's governing council is meeting to discuss the instability in Greece amid speculation it may decide to pull emergency funding of Greek banks in the absence of a financial rescue.

But sometime on Wednesday it's expected Greece's government may ask for a formal extension of its bailout with eurozone creditors which runs out in March, following days of failed meetings with the Greek government who've refused more spending reforms.

Greece's Tsipras remains defiant not to accept Eurozone bailout extension

Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras said Tuesday that he will not compromise with the Eurozone's ultimate to agree to an extention of its bailout.  

Speaking to his parliament in Athens, Tsipras said  his government would defy the notion that newly-elected governments act differently from their pre-election promises, and affirmed he would not follow that pattern. 

His comments were made as European Union finance ministers met for talks in Brussels to discuss the lack of a deal with Greece ahead of a March expiry date of its current bailout program.

UK finance minister George Osborne warned that time is running out to come to a decision.

Eurogroup president Jeroen Dijsselbloem has been at particular odds with Greece's finance minister Yanis Varoufakis who blamed the chief for changing a more relaxed draft agreement that Athens was ready to Accept.
