Last UK prisoner in Guantanamo Bay - supporters' meeting cancelled

The last remaining UK prisoner in Guantanamo Bay has twice been approved for release.

Supporters of Shaker Aamer planned to raise the profile of his case by handing a giant valentine's day card to the US ambassador to the UK, but the meeting was cancelled.

Mr Aamer says he was working for a humanitarian aid charity in Afghanistan but was put on a wanted list following the 9/11 attacks. He handed himself into US forces and has been detained in Guantanamo since 2002.

John McDonald a British MP who has been helping organise support for Shaker Aamer in parliament explains the outcome has been disappointing.

Shelling in Ukraine a day after ceasefire agreed

Renewed shelling has been reported in Ukraine's Eastern cities, just a day after a peace deal was agreed to by Russia and the Ukraine in Minsk.

The cities of Donetsk and Luhansk have been under fire, though there are no reports of casualties.

A ceasefire is expected to be observed after midnight local-time on Saturday, with the EU warning of further sanctions against Russia if pro-Russian rebels in the East of Ukraine do not respect the deal.

But  Chris Hutchins, Vladimir Putin's biographer, in scathing comments about the Russian regime says he doubts Moscow is listening.

UK MPs want to see child abuse inquiry extended

The British Government is being urged to extend its inquiry into child sexual abuse to cover Northern Ireland and Scotland, not just England and Wales.

The Home Secretary has also come under fire from MPs for not releasing salary details of the newly appointed chair of the inquiry, New Zealand High Court Judge, Lowell Goddard.

Chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee Keith Vaz says they are pleased with Justice Goddard's appointment, but believe the time permitted for this investigation means that it could be expanded to other areas.
