UK taking "strikingly modest"role against IS

The UK is not contributing enough to the coalition against the Islamic State, according to a report from British MPs.

The Defense Select Committee says Britain is taking a 'strikingly modest role' in the campaign in Iraq and Syria, and it should be stepped up.   From London, Catherine Drew reports.

UK 'NOT DOING ENOUGH' AGAINST ISLAMIC STATE

The UK is not contributing enough to the coalition against the Islamic State, according to a report from British MPs.

Britain is taking a 'strikingly modest role' in the campaign in Iraq and Syria, and it should be stepped up, says the Defence Select Committee.

It reports only 6% of coalition air strikes against IS have been carried out by the UK.

And it warns the Islamist group is the 'most significant threat' to international security to have come from the Middle East in decades.

The UK government insists it is playing a major part in 'comprehensive' action against IS.

But former Nato supreme commander, General Sir Richard Shirreff, says while no one is suggesting British boots on the ground - more must be offered by UK officials.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko calls for modern weapons to defend against Russia

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko has called for NATO countries to support Ukraine, including with weapons.


A recent Russian backed militant offensive in eastern Ukraine has lead to a surge in fighting there and increased civilian and military casualties.

New Ebola cases increasing again in West Africa - WHO

The number of new Ebola cases in the three West African countries hardest hit by the virus has increased again, marking the first spike so far this year. 


In the week ended February first, there were 124 new cases across Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia, according to the latest update from the World Health Organization.

Jordan's King vows 'Relentless War' after ISIS execution of pilot

Net neutrality advocates are celebrating after the head of the U.S's communications watchdog said internet providers should be regulated as a public utility, like telecom companies.

President Obama's choice to become the new United States Secretary of Defence has said he backs providing US arms to Ukraine.
