Greek PM confident of solution with EU

Greece's new Prime Minister is 'very optimistic' they will be able to negotiate on the country's debt with the European Union.

Alexis Tsipras has been meeting with the presidents of the three European Union institutions in Brussels (The commission, parliament and council).

He and his finance minister Yanis Varoufakis are touring European capitals, financial hubs and political institutions to reassure lenders about their plans as they try to find a new deal on Greece's 240 billion euro bailout debt.

Alexis Tsipras says his left wing, anti-austerity government intends to respect the rules of the European Union.

UAE reportedly suspended anti-ISIS strikes

It's emerged that one member of the coalition launching airstrikes against the so-called Islamic State suspended its participation, following the capture of a Jordanian pilot.

The United Arab Emirates is reportedly concerned about the safety of its military personnel.

The UAE is said to be demanding that the United States put better search-and-rescue capabilities in place, as Malcolm Brown reports.

UK government appoints New Zealand judge to head child abuse inquiry

The UK has appointed New Zealand judge Lowell Goddard as the head of a new inquiry into historical child sex abuse in England and Wales...

She will be the third head of the inquiry, after two former selections quit amid concerns over establishment links.

The inquiry was set up after claims of paedophiles operating in Westminster in the 1980s.

NZ Judge appointed as head of UK child abuse inquiry

A New Zealand judge has been named as the new head of an inquiry into historical child sex abuse in the UK.


The investigation was announced in July 2014, following claims of pedophiles operating in Westminster in the 1980s and the handling of abuse claims.

Investigation begins into NY train crash that kills 7


At least seven people are dead and a dozen injured after a New York commuter train caught fire when it hit a car at a leveo crossing during the Tuesday evening rush hour.  

The train with around 800 passengers hit the vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee near Valhalla around twenty miles outside of New York.   Six people on board the train were killed along with the Jeep's female driver.  The car was pushed for some distance before the vehicle and the front carriage of the train caught fire. 

Reporter Scott Pringle says an investigation is underway to find the cause of the accident.

UN calls EU asylum system 'very dysfunctional'

The European Union's asylum system has been branded as 'very dysfunctional' by a top United Nations official.

UN High commissioner for refugees, Antonio Guterres (prod: goo-ter-ez) warned that only a handful of countries are doing what is required in relation to the millions fleeing Syria and Iraq.

New figures show Britons have 50 per cent chance of developing cancer

A British cancer charity says that one in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. 

The new analysis by Cancer Research UK replaces an estimate that one in three people would develop cancer.  The change has been put down people living longer as Catherine Drew reports.

Iraq inquiry chair faces questions

The chair of the UK's Iraq inquiry Sir John Chilcot says the report will be published "as soon as possible" - but has refused to set out a timetable for its release…

Sir John Chilcot has been criticised for not publishing the report into the UK's operations in Iraq before the UK's general election in May.

He told MPs he had "under-estimated" the time it would take to examine 150,000 documents.

Sir Chilcot said a set timetable would not have worked for this inquiry…

Greek PM in Brussels for debt talks

Greece's Prime Minister Tsipras has been in Brussels  for talks with EU commission president Jean Claude Juncker, to gather support for his demands to change Greece's bailout terms.

Tsipras is also due to travel to France on Wednesday to meet President Francois Hollande, who's added to Italy's calls for a softer line on Greece.

UN warns that eastern Ukraine escalation is, "catastrophic"

The UN has warned that the surge in fighting in eastern Ukraine is, "catastrophic," with mounting civilian and military casualties.


The latest deaths were reportedly around the cities of Donetsk and Debaltseve and several government controlled villages though exact numbers couldn't be confirmed.

Two jihadists executed in Jordan

Officials in Jordan say two convicts, including a female jihadist, have been executed at dawn following the killing of one of its air force pilots by Islamic State militants…

Pentagon reveals details of airstrike against al Shabaab leader

The US military says it launched an airstrike in Somalia against a man American officials identify as a senior leader of the al Shabaab militant group.

The Pentagon says several air-to-ground missiles were fired at Yusef Dheeq (pron: YOU-seff  DEEK), whose responsibilities are said to include operations outside the country.  

US military spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby says the results of the attack are still being assessed.

Jordan's King Abdullah cuts short US visit after pilot's murder by IS

Jordan's King Abdullah is cutting short a visit to Washington after Islamic State released a videotape showing a Jordanian pilot apparently being burned to death.


The pilot had been held by Islamic State since December, and the government in Amman says it believes he was killed several weeks ago.

Dead prosecutor had drafted arrest warrant for Argentina's president

New evidence shows that an Argentinian prosecutor who was found dead under suspect circumstances had drafted a warrant for the arrest of the country's leader before his death.

Alberto Nisman was accusing President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner of trying to cover up Iranian involvement in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish Center in Buenos Aires.
