Srebrenica massacre convictions upheld at the ICTY in The Hague

A UN war crimes tribunal judge has upheld the convictions of those responsible for the Srebrenica massacre (PRON: shreb-ren-ee-tza) of 1995 in the former Yugoslavia.

The five men convicted in 2010 for the killing of around 8000 men and boys gad filed a number of appeals.

Russian UK ambassador: Bomber flights "routine"

Russia has defended a flight by two of its bombers close to UK airspace - saying its actions were not "threatening" or "disruptive"…

It has dismissed claims made by Britain that the flights caused disruption to civil aviation in the UK.

German couple killed in Paraguay

A German couple living in Paraguay were found shot dead near the ranch they owned. 

Paraguayan authorities said a left-wing guerrilla group was responsible for the attack.

Tense meeting in Athens between Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Eurogroup Chief

Greece's Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is holding talks with Eurogroup president Jeroen Dijsselbloem in Athens.

The meeting will center around the new Greek government's plans to abandon austerity measures despite warnings from creditors to stick to the terms of Greece's bailout deal.

Google’s earnings disappoint analysts for fifth consecutive quarter

Google's earnings have come in below analysts' predictions for the fifth quarter in a row.

Nonetheless, the search leader's revenue for the fourth quarter of last year showed a 41% increase on the same period in 2013.

US treasure hunter appears in court

A US treasure hunter who found hundreds of kilos of gold on a sunken ship has appeared in a Florida court charged with cheating his investors.

Tommy Thompson made the discovery in 1988 on board the SS Central America which sank in 1857.

He's accused of failing to pay the backers of his expedition to retrieve the gold and has been on the run for more than two years.

Angola, South Africa, Zimbabwe made limited human rights progress in 2014, says HRW

Angola, South Africa and Zimbabwe did little to improve their human rights records in 2014, according to a new report from Human Rights Watch.

The international rights group said Thursday that South Africa's poor scorecard in protecting social and economic rights is a major concern, while Angola and Zimbabwe continued to violate basic civil and political rights.

3 US Contractors Shot Dead in Kabul

Estimates of 3.2% GDP Rate Ahead Of Friday Report


The U.S. Government will release its first estimate of how the economy grew in the final quarter on Friday. Economists estimate the GDP, a tally of all goods and services produced across the US economy, grew at a 3.2% annual rate from October through December. Though slower than the third quarter's 5% rate, investors think the pace is a sign of slow but steady economic growth.

Obama will not return Gitmo to Cuba to meet Castro demand

The White House says it will not close the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay.

The Castro regime is demanding that America return it to Cuba as part of normalizing relations with the U.S.

Russian ambassador summoned over bomber flight

The Russian ambassador to the UK has been summoned by the British government - after Russian military bombers caused disruption to British civil air traffic on Wednesday...

Obama to propose $74 bn increase above current spending caps

The White House says President Barack Obama is to ask Congress to boost government spending by roughly 7 percent above current limits.

 

It sets up a clash with Republicans who insist that federal spending must be held in check.

 

Obama's budget, to be formally released on Monday, will call for $74 billion more than the levels frozen in place by cuts agreed to by both Democrats and Republicans and signed by Obama into law.

 

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said his new budget proposals will increase spending on both the domestic and military sides by similar amounts.

Jordan demands 'proof of life' as ISIS hostage swap hangs in balance

The ISIS deadline for a prisoner swap for the release of a captive Jordanian pilot has passed with no response from the extremists.  

Jordan had demanded proof that the pilot was still alive before it would free an Iraqi female prisoner.

The deadline was announced via a recorded message by Japanese prisoner Kenji Goto, who is also being held by the ISIS militants.
