US warns Russia about possible further sanctions over Ukraine

The United States is indicating that it's prepared to increase sanctions against Russia over its role in Ukraine.

The US Treasury Secretary, on a visit to Kiev, said that the US would seek ways to increase the pressure on Moscow.

As Malcolm Brown reports, the warning comes as Washington tries to help the Ukrainian economy and encourage reform.

Apple post giant quarterly profits

Technology giant apple has announced the company made a net profit of
$18 billion last fiscal quarter thanks largely to sales of the latest
iPhone.

With 74.5 million phones sold in a three month period it's the biggest
ever quarterly profit for a public company.

UN Peacekeeper among dead, during Israel-Hezbollah clashes

Israel is responding with force after Hezbollah's attack on one of its convoys near the border with Syria and Lebanon Wednesday.

12 Catholic officials charged with child sex abuse in Spain

Ten Catholic priests and two lay people have been charged with child sex offenses in Spain.

Militants say Tripoli Hotel Attack was Retaliation for Death of Captured Extremist

An affiliate of the Islamic State group says a deadly attack on a luxury hotel in Tripoli was in retaliation for the death of an Al-Queda militant, captured in a raid by US special forces.

Reports suggest 10 people were killed in the attack in the Libyan capital, including five guards, four Europeans and an American security contractor.

GREEK MARKETS IN TURMOIL

Greece's new Prime Minister says there will be no debt default, amid turmoil on Greek financial markets.

Alexis Tsipras has told his first cabinet meeting since winning Sunday's election that a renegotiation of Greece's international bailout is the government's priority.

But the European Union is warning Athens to stick to its commitments.

And Greek banking shares have been plummeting in Wednesday trading - while yields on Greek government debt have been soaring, a sign that investors see them as more risky.

Mr Tsipras' team has already announced it is putting major privatisation projects on hold.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has joked in the House of Commons that his Greek counterpart needs to adopt Mr Cameron's economic slogan.

'500 EUROPEAN WOMEN' HAVE JOINED IS IN SYRIA AND IRAQ

Around 500 women from western Europe have traveled to Syria and Iraq to join the Islamic State, according to new research.

President Poroshenko demands release of imprisoned Ukrainian pilot

US confirms American dead in Libya

The U.S. State Department is confirming, at least one American was among the eight killed when gunmen stormed the Corinthia luxury hotel in Tripoli.

Militants tied to the Islamic State organization have claimed responsbility for the attack.

US underscores interests in Cuba talks

The U.S. says its talks with Cuba are about the best interests of both nations.

In a letter published in Cuba's leading newspaper Granma, former leader Fidel Castro wrote that he does not trust the policies of the United States, but nor is he against the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

At the U.S. State Department, spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters, talks between Washington and Havana are about mutual interest.

Islamic State threatens two hostages

The Islamic State organization has released a video threatening to kill the remaining Japanese hostage and a Jordanian pilot within 24 hours unless the government of Jordan releases a woman charged with an attempted suicide attack.

The Japanese government is describing this as a very difficult situation and continuing to work with the Jordanian government on the release of journalist Kenji Goto.

At the U.S. State Department, spokesperson Jen Psaki said Washington remains in solidarity with their Japanese and Jordanian allies as the hours tick by.

UN secures release of South Sudanese child soldiers

The United Nations has secured a promise from a South Sudanese armed group to release about three thousand children -- mostly child soldiers -- in what the agency says is the largest-ever demobilization of its kind.


The first group of 280 children were released in Jonglei State Tuesday, with the other children slated to be released in phases over the next few weeks.

US State Dept 'examining reports US citizen among victims of Libya hotel attack'

Militants launched a deadly attack on a Libyan hotel popular with foreigners on Tuesday, killing several people.
