NORTH EAST US DEALS WITH HEAVY SNOWFALL

New York City remains essentially shut down as a snow storm moves across the north-east US.

Around 60 million people may be affected by blizzard conditions which could dump 30 inches of snow in states including New Jersay, Maine and New Hampshire.

All non-emergency vehicles have been banned from driving in New York.

But in some areas, forecasters have lowered their predictions for snowfall.

In New York, tourists are finding themselves restricted.

Russia's credit rating cut to junk

The ratings agency Standard and Poors has cut Russia's credit rating to junk, or below investment grade.


This makes it harder for Russia to borrow money from investors.

70TH ANNIVERSARY OF AUSCHWITZ LIBERATION

Holocaust survivors are taking part in memorial events at Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz, 70 years after it was liberated.

The former extermination camp is the world's biggest Jewish cemetary.

More than one million people were killed at the site in Poland during World War II.

Holocaust survivor Arak Hersch has returned to Auschwitz to mark the anniversary and remembers fellow prisoners committing suicide by touching the camp's electric fence.

It's exactly 100 days until the UK General Election which pollsters are calling the hardest ever to predict.

One latest poll puts the Conservative Party slightly ahead of the opposition Labour Party.

US announces charges against Russian spy ring in New York

US federal authorities on Monday charged three Russian nationals for spying on the US and trying to recruit New York City residents as intelligence assets. 


The case was announced Monday by the US Attorney General and FBI officials, following the arrest of one of the defendants in New York.

US limits embassy operations in Yemen following drone strike

The United States has closed most of its embassy operations in Sanaa, although there are no current plans to evacuate Americans from the chaotic country.

NATO condemns escalation in Ukraine

NATO is calling on Russia to end its support for separatist rebels in neighboring Ukraine, amidst an upsurge in fighting there.

The demand follows an extraordinary meeting of the body tasked with developing the relationship between the alliance and Ukraine.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg condemned indiscriminate attacks on civilians, in light of the deaths of 30 people in residential areas of the city of Mariupul.

He said the attack was launched from rebel-held territory.

10 dead after Greek-fighter jet crash in Spain

Ten people are dead and 13 injured after a fighter jet crashed at a military base in Spain on Monday.

Officials say a Greek F-16 jet crashed and exploded shortly after takeoff during a NATO training exercise.

"State of Emergency" declared as East Coast braces for snow

As the North East of the US braces for a record breaking snowfall, local officials have declared a state of emergency.

They are urging the public to stay inside and keep safe. 

Some three feet of snow are expected stretching from New Jersey up through Connecticut.

Power outages are likely, as well as hazardous road conditions and coastal flooding.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie asked residents to keep the roads clear.

Drone crash at White House deemed accidental

A small drone, which crashed on the grounds of the White House, was reportedly flown by a US government employee.

The individual in question is said to have told authorities that it was an accident, which happened while flying the device nearby.

The machine sparked a security alert when it was spotted in the early hours of the morning.

S&P downgrades Russian sovereign debt to "junk" status

The ratings agency Standard and Poor's has downgraded Russia's sovereign debt to "junk" status.


The move means that S&P believes Russia's economy doesn't meet the threshold for investment for the first time in a decade.

LRA Dominic Ongwen appears at the ICC

Lords Resistance Army commander Dominic Ongwen from Northern Uganda - has made his first appearance at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

He gave himself up to authorities in the Central African Republic at the beginning of January.

Originally thought to be 35, Ongwen says he is actually 40 and that he joined the LRA in 1998 at the age of 14 against his will.

Reports, Kurdish forces drive ISIS extremists from Kobane

Kurdish fighters have forced out Islamic State jihadists the Syrian border town of Kobane after more than four months of fierce fighting, according to activists there.

Apparent drone discovery causes White House security scare
