ATHENS ON COLLISION COURSE WITH TROIKA?

The election of Greece's anti-austerity party Syriza has driven concern about whether Athens is on a collision course with the EU over its bailout program - after its leftist leader Alexis Tsipras vowed to abandon painful spending cuts.

Eurozone Finance Ministers meeting in Brussels are discussing Greece's progress in delivering reforms in exchange for another 7 and a half billion euro in february - a deadline which was already delayed from December due to budget disagreements.

International creditors including the European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and EU countries say Greece must keep its end of the deal.

But Syriza wants to introduce a spending package to help Greece's poor who've suffered under the country's austerity drive in addition to writing off its debt.

Walking into the Brussels talks, the Eurogroup's President Jeroen Dijsselbloem [PRON: yeh-ro-en die-zel-bloom"] said that option was unlikely.

SYRIZA WIN CAUSES JITTERS ON FINANCIAL MARKETS

Greece's anti-austerity Syriza party is vowing to end the 'humiliation and pain' caused by the country's international bailout, after winning the general election.

Leader Alexis Tsipras is now working on forming a coalition - having fallen just short of an absolute majority in parliament.

The result has sent the euro to its lowest level against the US dollar in 11 years, on fears the election result may lead to Greece's exit from the currency.

Mr Tsipras insists he will renegotiate Greece's 2010 bailout - although Brussels and the European Central Bank say Greece must honour its commitments.

Danny Cox of stockbroker Hargreaves Lansdown says a clash is therefore looming.

Greek Leftist Party Syriza To Win Election

Anti-austerity Syriza party has won Greece's general election. With
more than 75% of the votes counted, Syriza is projected to win 149
seats, beating its rival, the conservative New Democracy Party of
Antonis Samaras, the prime minister who has become deeply unpopular
over his agreement to receive international loans in exchange for
painful reforms.

The winning party is rewarded with a 50-seat bonus but needs 151 seats
to form a majority and so far it is unclear who Syriza would share
power with in Parliament.

Thousands of Syriza supporters were cheering in the streets of Athens
on election day; celebrating what they see is a change in politics for
the country.

Our Brussels correspondent Sandra Gathmann says Syriza's win could
make the months ahead challenging for the European Union.
