Ongwen in ICC custody

The International Criminal Court says Dominic Ongwen, the Ugandan rebel leader facing war crimes charges, is in their custody.

The former commander of the Lord's resistance army is accused of orchestrating war crimes alongside Joseph Kony, also wanted by the ICC.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed Ongwen's transfer to the court calling it a step forward in efforts to bring justice to the thousands of victims of LRA violence in Uganda and other African countries over the past 28 years.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki also called on the remaining LRA members to follow the lead of the more than 250 individuals who have left the LRA since 2012 to put down their arms and return home.

Ongwen arrived in The Hague early Wednesday morning and will soon appear before judges who will assess whether his case can go to trial, as our correspondent Sandra Gathmann reports:

The Chilcot Inquiry examined the reasons behind the UK's involvement in the US-led invasion of Iraq to topple Saddam Hussein.
