Kerry will visit Paris to extend 'big hug'

US Secretary of State John Kerry says he's traveling to France to give Paris a "big hug" following last week's terror attacks.

He also denied his visit to the French capital on Friday is not about apologizing for the absence of President Obama during Sunday's "unity march"

British lawmakers demand urgent White House action over ban on haggis

British Prime Minister David Cameron is in Washington for meetings with President Barack Obama.


In London, members of Britain's House of Lords are calling on the President to take urgent action to lift the ban on the import of haggis to the United States.

President Hollande responds to Charlie Hebdo sellout

Unions urge government intervention to head of BP job losses

Inactivity twice as dangerous as obesity, says study

Researchers at the University of Cambridge say more than twice as many people in Europe die every year from inactivity than being overweight.

They say as little as 20 minutes of brisk walking every day would have substantial benefits.

Russian official tells locals to clear snow themselves

A deputy governor in Russia's second largest city, Saint Petersburg, has started a scandal by saying people there should clear snow from the streets themselves.


His comments came after complaints about the city council's poor snow clearing services.

STUDY: INACTIVITY MORE DANGEROUS THAN OBESITY

A lack of exercise is more dangerous and fatal in Europe than obesity, according to a new report.

University of Cambridge researchers say a 12 year study of more than 300 000 people says twice as many people could be dying because of inactivity as do from being overweight.

The report's authors say twenty minutes of brisk walking a day would have substantial benefits - even for those significantly overweight.

Professor Nick Wareham is the author of the report - he says activity needs to be made more easy.

REPORTS: PARIS POLICEWOMAN INJURED OUTSIDE PRESIDENT'S RESIDENCE

A policewoman has been injured in Paris after a car was driven at her outside the President's residence, according to French media.

It's reported several suspects ran from the car, which had been driven the wrong way down a one way street - and two have been arrested.

It comes a week after attacks by Islamist gunmen in Paris killed 17 people.

Charlie Hebdo magazine - targeted in the first wave of the attacks - has sold millions of copies of its latest edition, featuring a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad on the cover.

Caroline Fourest, a former Charlie Hebdo employee, is criticising parts of the British media for not broadcasting and printing the image.

Two mountaineers have finished their historic free climb up the Dawn Wall in Yosemite National Park, California.

The pair have been scaling the 3,000-foot (900m) granite monolith, El Capitan, since December 27th.

Ohio man arrested for US Capitol bomb plot

An Ohio man has been arrested for allegedly planning to lay pipe bombs around the U.S. Capitol building.

According to the complaint filed in U.S. federal court, Christopher Lee Cornell cited the Islamic State organization and deceased cleric Anwar al-Alwaki as his inspiration.

Obama pushes for better broadband access

President Obama says high-speed broadband is not a luxury but a necessity.

He's put forward a plan to expand access to broadband communications services by increasing competition.

During a visit to Cedar Falls in Iowa — a community that provides fast internet to its residents — the President accused big companies of trying to block competitors.

Obama was pitching one of the ideas he will highlight in next Tuesday's State of the Union address.

He says affordable, high-speed broadband networks are essential to growing the U.S.'s digital economy.

Syrian refugees in Jordan sliding into abject poverty, says UN Refugee Agency

The escalating Syrian crisis is pushing refugees living in Jordan into abject poverty, says the UN refugee agency, with two out of three refugees there now living below the national poverty line.

French comedian Dieudonne to stand trial over claims he "condones terrorism"

A controversial French comedian is to stand trial on charges that he condoned terrorism.

Dieudonne (PRON:  DIEU-DONNAY) is one of 54 people arrested since last week's attacks in Paris that left 17 people dead.

In a Facebook post he expressed sympathy for the extremist who attacked a kosher supermarket in the French capital where four people were killed.

House Approves Controversial Homeland Security Funding Bill

A controversial bill funding the Department of Homeland Security is headed to the US Senate after it was passed by the lower House of congress.  

The bill contains Republican amendments aimed at blocking President Obama's recent executive actions on immigration, which took steps to protecting millions of illegal immigrants from deportation.  

Republicans have accused Mr Obama of "executive overreach."
