Obama Promotes New Efforts To Fight ID Theft


President Obama is putting forward new legislation aimed at protecting the online privacy of Americans and the trail of data they create.

Microsoft criticizes Google for bug vigilantism

Microsoft has reacted angrily after Google publicized a Windows security flaw online.

The software company said it had planned to release a patch for the bug and that the search giant's behavior endangers customers. 

Google believes it's acting in the interests of user security.

Pakistani school where Taliban killed 150 reopens as Kerry visits country

Pakistani children have returned to the school in Peshawar where Taliban gunmen killed 150 of their classmates and teachers last month.

It's the first time the school has opened since the attack and comes as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in the country on an unannounced trip to shore up counter terrorism cooperation.

UN hoping for breakthrough at Libya talks

The United Nations will make an attempt this week to mediate peace talks in Libya, as fighting there continues to threaten the country's political stability.


The talks are expected to take place in Geneva, where UN spokeswoman Yvette Morris says officials will try to break the country's logjam.

UK REVIEWS TERROR LAWS AFTER PARIS ATTACKS

The UK is reviewing its terror preparedness and responses if faced with attacks like those seen in Paris last week.

Prime Minister David Cameron has chaired a security meeting which agreed events in Paris should be considered in future UK training exercises.

Security will also be ramped up with the aim of preventing extremists bringing weapons into the UK.

But Mr Cameron also wants to give security services extra powers for monitoring online and phone conversations of terror suspects - something human rights campaigners oppose.

Cuba releases prisoners as part of deal with US

Cuba has reportedly completed the release of prisoners agreed to in a ground-breaking deal with the United States.

American officials have confirmed that all 53 detainees have now been freed.

David Cameron calls Fox News terrorism analyst "an idiot"

British Prime Minister David Cameron has described an American terrorism analyst as "an idiot" for telling a US television channel that the British city of Birmingham was a no-go area for anyone who is not a Muslim.


Mr. Cameron was reacting to remarks made on America's Fox News by Steve Emerson, a widely-quoted analyst in the US who has often testified before Congress.

Kerry makes unannounced trip to Pakistan, will then head to France

US Secretary of State John Kerry is making an un-announced visit to Pakistan, after completing a day of talks with Indian government officials.

He touched down in Islamabad on Monday afternoon and will press Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to do more to crack down on extremist groups.

He'll then head to Paris for talks on terrorism with government officials there, amid criticism that the Obama administration failed to send sufficiently senior figures to France for the weekend marches following last week's attacks.

French cartoonists reject German right wingers

A group of French and Francophone cartoonists passed out flyers in the German city of Dresden urging people to reject the growing right-wing movement there. Many are concerned that the Charlie Hebdo attacks will strengthen the group known as Pegida.

Terrorism analyst apologizes for remarks about Britain on Fox News

An terrorism analyst regularly seen on American television networks has apologized after claiming the British city of Birmingham is now a no-go area for anyone who isn't a Muslim.


Steve Emerson, who has appeared hundreds of times on US television since the attacks of September 11th 2001, also falsely told viewers of America's Fox News that in some parts of London, religious police beat up people who are not wearing Islamic dress.
