Hundreds of people have gathered in central London - as in cities across the world - in solidarity over the attack in Paris which left 12 people dead.

Trafalgar Square has been the scene for a largely silent protst with pens held aloft.

This as police in France continue to hunt three gunmen who opened fire at the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

And UK Prime Minister David Cameron says more can be done to try and safeguard citizens - but not at the expense of the freedom of the press.

US offers help to France following magazine attack

The Obama administration is offering the French government whatever help it needs, after 12 were shot to death at the offices of magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris.

That said, while American intelligence had been briefed on previous threats against the publication, they were not aware of any looming attacks.

12 dead in French magazine attack

Twelve were killed when at least 3 men attacked the Paris offices of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The magazine has repeatedly published cartoons critical of Islam and witnesses told the French police, the attackers shouted, "We have avenged the prophet!"

Speaking via a translator, Paris Prosecutor Francois Mollins described the scene.

US Pres. Obama denounces Paris magazine attack as cowardly

U.S. President Barack Obama has denounced the attack on the French magazine Charlie Hebdo which left 12 dead as cowardly.

The American president offered any help the French might request in tracking down the three gunmen, who fled the scene, first by car, then on foot.

President Obama said it is important for the free world to stand together against acts of terrorism like this.

British Prime Minister David Cameron is joining voices with international leaders condemning the attack on the French magazine Charlie Hebdo.

New attempt to extradite film-maker Roman Polanski on child sex charges

United States prosecutors are making another attempt to extradite film-maker Roman Polanski on child sex-charges dating back almost 40 years.

Paris gunmen claimed to represent Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

The gunmen on-the-run after Wednesday's attack on the Paris office of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo claimed to be members of the Yemeni affiliate of Al Qaeda.

In the United States, President Barack Obama has strongly condemned the attack on the offices of a French satirical magazine.

In a statement, the US leader said that America's thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the attack and the people of France at what he calls a "difficult time".

Meanwhile, a group representing journalists is calling the massacre a "brazen assault on free expression".

French satirical magazine targeted in terrorist attack.

12 people have been killed in a shooting at the Paris offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Two men armed with Kalashnikovs entered the building at around 11:30 local time and opened fire.

Charlie Hebdo journalists who were at the scene have said they must have known the magazine held a weekly editorial meeting at that time - and they were looking for the newspaper's journalists by name.

Charlie Hebdo is a satirical newspaper that frequently takes aim at targets ranging from Muslims to the far right - as Elena Casas explains.
