Oil price dips below $50 as UK government presses industry


Oil prices have dipped below $50 a barrel for the first time in six years.

The price of a barrel of Brent crude went as low as $49.92 in early trading on Wednesday before rising back above the fifty dollar level.

The British government is challenging the country's businesses to lower prices as a result of falling energy costs.

LRA DEFECTOR IN CUSTODY

Uganda's military says a senior commander in the rebel group the Lord's Resistance Army has been taken into custody.

Dominic Ongwen surrendered to US forces in the Central African Republic.

He's wanted by the International Criminal Court over claims of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The LRA - led by Joseph Kony - has abducted thousands of children in northern Uganda and the US has deployed forces to hunt him and other fighters in the Central African Republic, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

David Cameron and Angela Merkel to hold talks in London

British prime minister David Cameron hosts Angela Merkel in London on Wednesday - with German concerns over the British government's plans to change EU treaties set to top the agenda. 

Cameron has promised to negotiate concessions from the EU ahead of a planned referendum on Britain's membership by 2017.

Eurozone falls into deflation

The Eurozone has fallen into deflation for the first time in over five years.


Official figures show prices in December were 0.2% lower than the previous year.

Turkish Marxist group claims responsibility for Istanbul suicide bombing

A Marxist group has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing carried out in Turkey on Tuesday.

The attack on a police station in a busy tourist area of Istanbul killed one police officer as well as the female bomber.

BANK OF ENGLAND 'DIDN'T SEE FINANCIAL CRISIS COMING'

The Bank of England seemed to be unaware of the gravity of the situation just a month before the start of the global financial crisis, according to newly released documents.

Minutes from the Bank's governing body from 2007 to 2009 have been published.

They show the Bank did identify liquidity as an issue of 'central concern' in July 2007, but not something it needed to take action on.

New models were being worked on to detect risks to the financial system, but the minutes don't show an impending risk was suspected.

Danny Cox of stockbroker Hargreaves Lansdown says the documents are damning.

BRENT CRUDE FALLS BELOW $50

The price of a barrel of Brent Crude oil has fallen below $50 for the first time since 2009.

It's the latest landmark in weeks of falling oil prices which have led to volatility on global stock markets.

In the UK, and elsewhere, questions are now being asked of energy suppliers who aren't yet passing the price slump onto consumers.

Lawrence Slade from Energy UK which represents Britain's energy suppliers says it's not that simple.

MERKEL IN LONDON FOR CAMERON EU TALKS

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is in the UK for talks expected to be dominated by the issues of EU reform, and the European economy.

Germany holds the presidency of the G7 group of nations, so her discussions with Prime Minister David Cameron are also expected to touch on security issues, the Ukraine crisis and Ebola.

But Mr Cameron is under pressure from some Conservatives to show he can secure commitments from Germany for European Union reform.

He's promised a referendum on Britain's membership if he wins May's election but wants the UK to stay in a reformed EU.

Russian rouble falls 4% in value as oil hits new lows

The Russian rouble currency has fallen more than 4% in value as oil prices hit a new 5 and a half year low.


The rouble has been weakening in value for months affected by sanctions and Russia's dependence on energy exports.

California Begins Bullet Train Construction Despite Budget Shortfall

Tech giants and start ups are both showing off products they hope will inspire consumers to dig into their pocketbooks.

Consumer Electronics Show kicks off in Las Vegas

Up to 160,000 attendees have gathered in Las Vegas for the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show — the largest trade convention of its kind in the world.

Every year at CES, top brands unveil their newest products, and the event's widely seen as setting the technology tone for the year ahead.

Alongside the regular collection of ultra high definition TVs and wearable devices, some of the more unusual offerings include a 3D food printer, a belt that adjusts to accommodate your lunch, a Segway with no handlebars, and a connected headset that can "read" your mind.

Pres. Obama wants to work with 114th US Congress

U.S. President Barack Obama says he wants to work together with the Republican leadership of the U.S. Congress.

That despite his spokesperson saying that the American president would veto the Keystone XL pipeline, one of the first pieces of legislation Congressional lawmakers were set to take up.

After meeting with Mexican President Pena Nieto in the Oval Office, U.S. President Barack Obama expressed his optimism as the 114th U.S. Congress gets down to work.

Obama promises to veto Keystone legislation

The White House says that U.S. President Barack Obama will veto legislation to approve the Keystone XL pipeline.

The pipeline is intended to run from the tar sands fields of Canada down through the United States to the refineries of Texas and Louisiana.

US and Mexican Presidents meet in Washington

US President, Barack Obama, and his Mexican counterpart Enrique Pena Nieto have met in the Oval Office, discussing Washington's shift in policy towards Cuba, as well as security and immigration issues.

Status of Cuban political prisoners unclear

The U.S. is emphasizing the need to fully engage Cuba, even as questions remain about 53 political prisoners which Havana promised to release as part of the deal for normalized relations with Washington.

Family members and Cuban activists in exile in the U.S. say they do not know who is on the list nor whether any of the 53 prisoners have been released, increasing their worry that the Castro regime will renege on their promise to release them.

US urges North Korea to comply with UN resolutions on nuclear programme

The U.S. says, if true, allegations that North Korea has the technology to build miniature nuclear weapons would be a clear violation of United Nations resolutions and the international order.

South Korea has strongly suggested North Korea has succeeded in miniaturizing weapons technology so a nuclear bomb could fit on an intercontinental missile.

South Korea also says Pyongyang has a cyberwarfare staff of 3,000.

End of Guantanamo Bay prison might be in sight

There's increasing discussion in the United States about whether there's a path to the closure of the controversial Guantanamo Bay prison.
The prison was built in Cuba to detain terrorism suspects after the 9/11 attacks in 2001. However, as John Clarke reports from Washington, the practice of indefinite detention without trial has become a stain on the reputation of America and it's President.

Washington rejects Venezuela's prisoner swap offer

The United States has rejected the possibility of a prisoner swap with Venezuela.

Venezuela's President, Nicolas Maduro, offered to free political prisoner Leopoldo Lopez, in exchange for the release of a Puerto Rican nationalist held in the United States.
