Obama promises to veto Keystone legislation

The White House says that U.S. President Barack Obama will veto legislation to approve the Keystone XL pipeline.

The pipeline is intended to run from the tar sands fields of Canada down through the United States to the refineries of Texas and Louisiana.

As our Washington correspondent Priscilla Huff reports, the bill was expected to be the first political battle of the new year.

US and Mexican Presidents meet in Washington

US President, Barack Obama, and his Mexican counterpart Enrique Pena Nieto have met in the Oval Office, discussing Washington's shift in policy towards Cuba, as well as security and immigration issues. 

President Obama also said that the leaders spoke about the 43 Mexican students who went missing on September last year, causing great controversy in the country.

Three in Custody for Police shootings Monday

Status of Cuban political prisoners unclear

The U.S. is emphasizing the need to fully engage Cuba, even as questions remain about 53 political prisoners which Havana promised to release as part of the deal for normalized relations with Washington.

Family members and Cuban activists in exile in the U.S. say they do not know who is on the list nor whether any of the 53 prisoners have been released, increasing their worry that the Castro regime will renege on their promise to release them.

US urges North Korea to comply with UN resolutions on nuclear programme

The U.S. says, if true, allegations that North Korea has the technology to build miniature nuclear weapons would be a clear violation of United Nations resolutions and the international order.

South Korea has strongly suggested North Korea has succeeded in miniaturizing weapons technology so a nuclear bomb could fit on an intercontinental missile.

South Korea also says Pyongyang has a cyberwarfare staff of 3,000.

End of Guantanamo Bay prison might be in sight

There's increasing discussion in the United States about whether there's a path to the closure of the controversial Guantanamo Bay prison.
The prison was built in Cuba to detain terrorism suspects after the 9/11 attacks in 2001. However, as John Clarke reports from Washington, the practice of indefinite detention without trial has become a stain on the reputation of America and it's President.

Washington rejects Venezuela's prisoner swap offer

The United States has rejected the possibility of a prisoner swap with Venezuela.

Venezuela's President, Nicolas Maduro, offered to free political prisoner Leopoldo Lopez, in exchange for the release of a Puerto Rican nationalist held in the United States.

A rapist and murderer in Belgium who has been granted permission to undergo euthanasia has had the date for his death suspended.

Frank Van Den Bleeken was scheduled to be killed by lethal injection on Sunday but Belgium's Ministry of Justice now says it will not go ahead.

SpaceX postpones test to land rocket on barge in Atlantic

The American company SpaceX has postponed an attempt to land part of a rocket on a barge positioned in the Atlantic Ocean.


The test is now expected to take place at the end of the week.


It's a bid to see whether it's possible to recycle pieces of space debris.

Rolls-Royce sees record car sales

Kurdish fighters now in control of 80% of Kobane

Kurdish fighters battling the Islamic State in Kobane, on the Turkish border with Syria, now control 80% of the town, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Kurds backed by Iraqi peshmerga forces have been fighting the militant group in the town since September.

Migrant smugglers are using a new route into Europe

People-traffickers smuggling migrants into Europe are using a new route according the the European Union border agency, Frontex.

Nearly 1200 migrants were found on cargo ships in the Mediterranean sea last week and thousands died making similar journeys in 2014.

ROLLS-ROYCE REPORTS RECORD SALES

Rolls-Royce sold a record number of cars in 2014 - over 4000 for the first time in the company's history.

Sales rose 12 % worldwide on 2013, hitting 4063, with the US the biggest market for the British-based brand.

The BMW-owned firm says it will decide in 2015 whether to enter the SUV market.

It has also created 200 new jobs in the UK in the last 18 months.

Rolls-Royce remains the top seller globally of cars which retail for more than €200,000 / £157,000.

Dow Jones falls 331 as oil drops to $50
