Brazilian serial killer in custody

Brazilian police forces say they have arrested a man who has confessed to killing 42 people over the last decade. 

Rio de Janeiro authorities are searching for the victims, after the arrest of 26 year old Sailson Jose das Gracas.

South Korean 'Nut-rage' executive apologies after resigning

The vice-chairman of Korean Air has made a public apology for an
argument she had with a stewardess over a bag of nuts.

Russian authorities say 5 militants killed in gun battle in Dagestan

Russian authorities say five insurgents have been killed in a gun battle with security forces in the country's restive southern region of Dagestan.


It comes around a week after battles on the streets of the capital of the neighbouring region Chechnya.

Northern Ireland Peace Deal Fails

Peace talks in Northern Ireland focusing on how to deal with issues of contentious parades, the flying of flags and the legacy of its troubled past, have ended without agreement.


Disputes are threatening to destabilise the power sharing administration in Northern Ireland, made up of unionists and nationalists.

UK spoke to US pre-publication of CIA interrogation report


UK intelligence officials spoke to counterparts in the US before the publication of a report in to interrogation tactics used by the CIA, says the British government. 


It said requests made regarding any mention of the UK in the report were because of "national security."  


The Prime Minister David Cameron's office had previously said it had not asked for information relating to Britain to be left out.

EU member states lobbied hard by Moscow over sanctions

European Union countries thought to be sympathetic to Russia are being targeted by a Moscow lobbying push to veto new EU sanctions - in place for what the West sees as Russia's part in the Ukraine crisis.

Hungary, Cyprus and Italy are thought to be the most Russia-friendly with a renewal of the measures set for the new year.

US AVOIDS GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN WITH $1.1TN BUDGET

The US has avoided a government shutdown after the last-minute passage of a $1.1tn budget by the House of Representatives.

The Republican bill passed 219 votes to 206, although some areas of government will only receive short term funding.

Some Democrats supported the legislation after President Obama called for them to do so - others expressed anger at his position.

The bill will now have to be passed by the Senate and sent to the President to sign into law.

Russia's rouble continues to fall despite central bank intervention

Russia's rouble currency has once again fallen to historic lows after an interest rate rise by the country's central bank failed to support it.


The rouble was below 57 to the dollar after early trading on Friday and Russia's stock market also dropped.

Ukraine's President criticises India for hosting annexed Crimea's Russian backed leader

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has criticised India's government for hosting Sergei Aksyonov, the Moscow backed leader of the annexed Ukrainian territory of Crimea, as part of a Russian delegation.


President Poroshenko is on a tour of Australia who's Prime Minister Tony Abbott is one of the world leaders who sharply condemns Russia's annexation of Crimea and backing for pro-Russia militants in eastern Ukraine.

Scores killed in twin bomb explosions in Nigeria

INTRO: Two bomb explosions have killed at least 30 people and injured scores more in the city of Jos in North Eastern Nigeria. The bombs went off almost simultaneously at a busy marketplace in the city. At least 250 people have been killed in bomb explosions in northern Nigeria in the past two months. Brennan says "unknown and unknowable" whether torture yielded intelligence

The Director of the CIA John Brennan says the interrogation techniques the US used in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks were "abhorrent", but he's defended his staff in a rare press conference at CIA headquarters,

He told reporters he "fundamentally disagrees" with claims by a US Senate Committee that torture served no useful purpose in gathering intelligence.

US Congress approves Sanctions on Venezuelan government officials



The United States Congress has approved legislation to impose sanctions on Venezuelan government officials who have violated the rights of protesters during demonstrations that took place earlier this year.

Cheney: CIA Torture Report Is 'Full of Crap'

The former US Vice President, Dick Cheney, has said that the Senate Intelligence Committee report into the CIA's post-9/11 interrogation programme is 'full of crap'.

US Shuts its last Detention Centre in Afghanistan


The US has shut its last detention facility in Afghanistan.

Man charged in UK in suspected slavery case


A 74-year old man has been charged in London in a suspected slavery case.  Police charged Aravindan Balakrishnan with rape, false imprisonment and child cruelty.


The charges relate to three women who were rescued from a house in South London last year and who may have been held as slaves for around 30 years.
