California braces for major storm

Northern California is braced for its biggest storm in five years.

Fierce rain and wind is already sweeping across the San Francisco Bay area - which has been suffering from a record drought for multiple years now.

US Congress approves Sanctions on Venezuelan government officials



The United States Congress has approved legislation to impose sanctions on Venezuelan government officials who have violated the rights of protesters during demonstrations that took place earlier this year. 

But Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro is biting back, accusing the US of being "insolent" and warning the country not to pass sanctions.

Cheney: CIA Torture Report Is 'Full of Crap'

The former US Vice President, Dick Cheney, has said that the Senate Intelligence Committee report into the CIA's post-9/11 interrogation programme is 'full of crap'.

Mr Cheney told Fox News that although he hadn't read the full 6000 page report, its findings were flawed and an affront to the intelligence agency.

US Shuts its last Detention Centre in Afghanistan


The US has shut its last detention facility in Afghanistan.

Officials have also confirmed there are no more prisoners there, ending a much-criticised chapter in Washington's fight against Islamic extremism.

Man charged in UK in suspected slavery case


A 74-year old man has been charged in London in a suspected slavery case.  Police charged Aravindan Balakrishnan with rape, false imprisonment and child cruelty.


The charges relate to three women who were rescued from a house in South London last year and who may have been held as slaves for around 30 years.

Wall Street Reform Proposal Could Derail US Budget Deal

A fight is brewing in the U.S. Congress over a proposal to roll-back of a law banning deposit-holding banks from many risk trading practices.

76 ARRESTED AT LONDON ERIC GARNER DEMO

76 people have been arrested after a protest at a London shopping centre over the death of Eric Garner in New York.

The so-called 'die-in' at London's Westfield mall in west London attracted around 600 people in total.

The demonstration was held in solidarity with rallies in the US since Eric Garner died during an arrest in New York.

Many taking part held banners saying, 'black lives matter'.

Rouble falls further amid speculation of Central Bank intervention

The Russian rouble currency has lost further value against the dollar as global oil prices continue to decline.

Putin in India to sign major energy, defense deals

Russian President Vladimir Putin is in India for a day of talks with the Indian Prime Minister as well as government and industry officials.


The visit comes with Russia facing isolation and sanctions from the West over the conflict in Ukraine.


Mr Putin is expected to sign a number of major contracts during his visit, particularly in the defense and energy sectors.

White House demurs over calls for CIA prosecutions

The White House has refused to be drawn on calls for former CIA and other government officials to be prosecuted over the use of torture in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks on America.

The United Nations is demanding the prosecution of those officials responsible for the torture revealed in a US Senate report on Tuesday, and as our Washington Correspondent Simon Marks reports, there have been similar calls on Capitol Hill.

Brazil releases a report on regime brutality
