[Wrap] Ebola Fighters named Time's Persons of the Year

Time magazine has named the healthcare workers who have battled the Ebola virus as its Persons of the Year.

The magazine chose the 'Ebola Fighters' for it what it called their "courage, kindness and bravery."

Brazil releases a report on regime brutality

Brazil's National Truth Commission has released a report saying  illegal arrests, torture, executions and forced disappearances were carried by state agents during the country's two decades of military rule.

The Commission is now calling for the prosecution of those responsible for the acts.

Deal reached to keep US government funded

Congressional lawmakers have reached a deal valued at more than $1 trillion to keep the U.S. government operating and funded through September 2015.

There had been some talk in Washington that the Republicans might allow the U.S. government to shut down to force U.S. President Barack Obama's hand on key political issues.

Malala receives her Nobel Prize

The 17 year old Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai has received the Nobel Peace Prize along with her co-winner.....child rights campaigner Kailash Satyarthi from India during a ceremony in Norway. 

The Nobel committee described both laureates as "champions of peace".

Mr Satyarthi described the prize was "a great opportunity" to  work against child slavery.

Ms Yousafzai was shot in the head by Taliban gunmen in October 2012 for campaigning for girls' education.

She said the joint prize was an opportunity for India and Pakistan to work together.

EU willing to sanction Russia further

European Union leaders say they are prepared to offer more support money for Ukraine and will slap further sanctions on Russia if necessary.

Prosecution wins right to appeal Pistorius verdict

INTRO: Prosecutors have won their bid to appeal the culpable homicide verdict handed down to Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The State will now seek a murder conviction. Pistorius was found guilty of the lesser crime and sentenced to five years in prison. He could be eligible for parole in about 9 months. Russian Prime Minister says rouble's fall is not a good in the long term

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev says that the devaluation of the rouble is not good in the long term.


Sanctions and falling oil prices are among the factors that have contributed to the rouble losing over 40% of its value against the dollar over the course of the year.

UN CALLS FOR PROSECUTIONS OVER US TORTURE

Senior United Nations officials are calling for the prosecution of US officials after a report detailing CIA interrogation of al Qaeda suspects.

The Senate report describes techniques used as 'brutal'.

The UN's Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Counter-Terrorism Ben Emmerson says figures from President George Bush's administration should be prosecuted.

And while questions are still being asked about the UK's role in the rendition of some terror suspects for the US - current British Prime Minister David Cameron is condemning the practices outlined in the Senate report.

Russian opera star shocks by posing with Ukraine rebel flag

Internationally renowned Russian soprano Anna Netrebko has stirred controversy by posing with a flag used by pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine.


The move came as the opera star donated thousands of dollars to the central opera house in the main separatist stronghold, Donetsk.


While some fans have been praising the singers' actions, others have branded the singer "stupid" and "naive".

'WEATHER BOMB' HITS UK

A so-called 'weather bomb' is hitting the UK with strong winds and high waves causing serious travel disruptions.

More than 17,000 people in the Western Isles of Scotland have been left without power.

Many trains and ferries to the west of Britain have been cancelled.

The 'weather bomb' is a deep low pressure system moving slowly eastwards bringing gales - before another storm front's expected to move back across the UK on Thursday.

California's historic drought result of nature, not climate change

Former POW Senator reacts to 'CIA torture report'

CIA, Republicans reject torture report

America's Central Intelligence Agency is rejecting the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee report on torture as incomplete and selective.

Even before it was released, former U.S Vice President Dick Cheney took the lead in defending the CIA's actions, saying the intelligence officers ought to be decorated, not criticized.
