Two western hostages killed in Yemen during botched US raid

Two western hostages have been killed in a botched raid by US special forces on Yemen.


An American journalist and a South African teacher died in the attempt to rescue them, and a number of militants are also believed to have been killed.

UN statement expresses "legitimate concerns" over US grand jury process

INTRO:

United Nations human rights experts have expressed "legitimate concerns" over two recent US grand jury decisions making headlines worldwide.

This week in New York a grand jury decided not to bring charges against a white policeman in the death of Eric Garner - an unarmed black man.

That verdict came just over a week after a grand jury in Ferguson, Missouri reached a similar verdict in the case of Michael Brown.

Uber Valuation Tops 40 Billion Dollars

The car service start-up Uber has confirmed its latest round of venture financing values the company at more than 40 billion dollars.
 
That’s the highest valuation for any private start-up now backed by venture capitalists.

US urges accountability following Kenyatta decision

The U.S. is urging the Kenyan government to follow through on punishing those accountable for the violence which followed the 2007 elections.

The International Criminal Court dropped its case against Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta for his role in the deaths of 1200 Kenyans.

The ICC prosecutors says their case was impeded by the failure of the Kenyan government to turn over key documents and the U.S. State Department's spokesperson Marie Harf says the Kenyan government should do more.

Orion splashes down in Pacific Ocean

NASA's Orion space capsule has splashed down off the California coast.

After launching from Cape Canaveral earlier, Orion orbited the Earth twice in a four-and-a-half hour mission before landing in the Pacific Ocean.

French rail firm to pay compensation for its part in the holocaust

France's state rail company has agreed a compensation package for victims of the holocaust who they deported to concentration camps in the second world war.

The French government made the deal with the United States and the total compensation will amount to 60 million euro.

Obama nominates new Defense Secretary

US President Barack Obama has nominated Ashton Carter to be his new Secretary of Defense.

If confirmed, he will be the President's 4th Defense Secretary in the last six years.

He'll follow outgoing Republican Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, who recently resigned following reported clashes with the Obama Administration.

Ashton Carter is less well known publicly than many of his predecessors, but he's had a long career within the Pentagon, working in various capacities under eleven previous Secretaries of Defense.

Mr. Carter's nomination is expected to pass smoothly through the Republican-held Congress.

But once confirmed, the new Defense Secretary will face a number of challenges, as the US battles ISIS and global terrorism, the Ebola epidemic, as well as budgetary challenges on the homefront.

Orion launches on historic test mission

NASA's first new spaceship in 40 years has blasted off from a launch pad in Florida.

It was the second try at launching the Orion spacecraft after a series of problems caused Thursday's attempt to be scrubbed.

Orion orbited the Earth twice and traveled to a height of 3,600 miles above the Earth's surface, before heading for a splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the California Coast. [Note: splash down due at 16:28 GMT].

Pres. Obama to host King Abdullah of Jordan
