Orion launches on historic test mission

NASA's first new spaceship in 40 years has blasted off from a launch pad in Florida.

It was the second try at launching the Orion spacecraft after a series of problems caused Thursday's attempt to be scrubbed.

Orion orbited the Earth twice and traveled to a height of 3,600 miles above the Earth's surface, before heading for a splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the California Coast. [Note: splash down due at 16:28 GMT].

US adds most jobs in 15 years

UK lends one of Elgin Marbles to Russia

The UK's British Museum has loaned one of the statues it has from Greece's 2,500 year old Parthenon to Russia. 
This is the first time one of the group of artefacts, known as the Elgin marbles, has been loaned out.

Vatican finds millions of addition euros in finances

Rouble falls sharply on hawkish Putin speech

Russia's rouble currency has fallen sharply in value after a hawkish speech by President Vladimir Putin.


His address disappointed hopes that the Kremlin might signal a compromise over the crisis in Ukraine or lay out convincing measures to tackle Russia's own economic crisis.

Pres. Obama to host King Abdullah of Jordan

Dept. of Justice rules cops in Cleveland use excessive force

Police in the US city of Cleveland, Ohio do have pattern of using excessive force - that's the result of a year-long study recently completed by the Department of Justice.

Speaking from Cleveland, Attorney General Eric Holder announced that city officials and the Justice Department will together create a statement of principles that can be used to hold officers accountable in court, when their use of force is suspect.

Mr. Holder cited insufficient accountability, training, policies, and a lack of community engagement by the police department as factors contributing to the use of excessive force.

Cleveland was recently the site of the fatal shooting of black 12 year old Tamir Rice, who was playing outside with a fake gun when he was killed by a white officer.

This is merely one in a string of high profile, racially charged incidents involving the police across the US.

Attorney General Eric Holder said police is Cleveland are using excessive force.

DNA test identifies Islamic State leader's 'daughter'

DNA tests have shown that a girl being held by Lebanese authorities is the daughter of the Islamic State leader, according to the country's interior ministry.

NY police hit back at critics over Garner chokehold death

New York police are defending themselves against accusations of racism after protests that were sparked by a grand jury decision not to prosecute an officer who choked father-of-six Eric Garner to death.


The police union says the city's officers have been betrayed by members of Congress and the Mayor of New York who expressed astonishment at the grand jury decision.

NASA has delayed the historic launch of its deep-space Orion capsule for 24 hours.

NASA Orion 'Mars' spacecraft launch forced to delay

A wayward boat, strong winds and a stuck valve were all responsible for the suspension of this morning's test flight of the Orion space capsule in Florida.

NASA's launch window which is more than two-and-a-half-hours long was missed but mission team is confident another attempt can be made before the weekend.

Orion is the ship NASA hope to use to send humans to the moon, an asteroid and even Mars.

Mexican federal troops deployed across country

UAE woman arrested in slaying of American teacher

Civil Rights props launched by US Justice System

A Federal civil rights investigation is being launched but he US justice department, following the death of a black man who was placed in a chokehold by a white police officer in New York.

A grand jury decided not to charge the officer for the death of Eric Holder, who was stopped on the street for allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes.

Protests broke out in New York after the decision was given, reminiscent of those demonstrations  in Ferguson 10 days ago.
