Anti-IS coalition meets in Brussels

Sixty foreign ministers from around the world are meeting in Brussels to convene the first anti-Islamic State coalition.

US Secretary of State John Kerry will chair the US lead initiative which intends to unite international efforts to defeat IS and will discuss combined military strategy.

Russia faces recession, admits Russian minister

Russia's Deputy Economy Minister says Russia faces a recession, with GDP probably set to fall by 0.8 percent next year.

That's a significant change from a previous forecast of 1.2 GDP growth.

The announcement comes as NATO foreign Ministers meet in Brussels to discuss launching further economic sanctions against Russia.

Pro-Russia militants break Donetsk ceasefire again, says Ukraine

Ukraine says that pro-Russia militants backed by Russian special forces have attacked its troops at Donetsk airport again, despite a ceasefire deal earlier in the day.


Fighting has raged at the airport for weeks, with Ukrainian troops holding on despite repeated bombardment and attacks by pro-Russia forces.

Lebanon detains IS leader's 'wife and son'

Lebanese authorities claim they've detained a wife and young son of the Islamic State group's leader.
The woman is believed to be one of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi's wives.  Very little is known about him including how many wives and children he has.
It comes amid attempts to reach a prisoner-exchange deal between Lebanon on the one side and the Islamic State group and the Nusra Front on the other.

Hugh Naylor, Beirut correspondent for the Washington Post, says the pair may be used as a bargaining chip in negotiations with IS.

Mexicans call for president to resign

Thousands of people have marched across Mexico, denouncing President Enrique Pena Nieto's handling of the case of 43 massacred students. 

Although the protests were mostly peaceful, some turned violent as protesters clashed with police forces, fires were lit, windows smashed and banks vandalized.

U.S. Attorney General pledges to tackle racial profiling by police

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder says the Justice Department will issue new guidelines aiming to end racial profiling by police.

This comes amidst ongoing protests across the U.S. over a grand jury's decision to not press charges against the white police officer who shot unarmed black teen Michael Brown in the Missouri suburb of Ferguson.

FBI warns of destructive, new cyber threat

Law enforcement officials in the United States are warning American companies about a new and destructive cyber threat. 

The software concerned can reportedly knock out computers and bring down networks.

Kenyatta vows to fight terrorist extremists after massacre

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has pledged to fight terorism aimed at dismantling the country's democratic foundations following a massacre by Islamist group al-Shabab.

The president asked Kenyans to unite, and vowed not to flinch in war against terrorists.

President Kenyatta has replaced his interior minister and police chief David Kimayo stood down in a high-level reshuffle.. 

The al-Shabab group killed 36 quarry workers in the Mandera region near the Somali border Monday evening.

Non-Muslim workers were shot dead after being separated from the Muslims.

President Kenyatta said the time had come for Kenyans to chose sides in the war on terrorists.

Obama calls on Congress to approve multi-billion dollar Ebola fund

A temporary ceasefire agreed in Donetsk airport

INTRO: Ukraine's military says a temporary ceasefire has been established at the airport in Ukraine's eastern city of Donetsk. According to the statement from the military, the truce was agreed following talks between Russian and Ukrainain officials following days of intensified fighting in the area. Anya Ardayeva reports from Moscow.

HIV Virus Slowing

A major scientific study from the University of Oxford in England, has discovered that HIV is becoming less infectious.


According to the findings, the HIV infection is taking longer to cause Aids and is adapting to our immune system.

NATO Foreign Ministers meeting in Brussels

Foreign Ministers from the 28 member of the military alliance NATO are meeting in Brussels with the focus of their discussions on the Ukraine crisis and the Islamic State in the middle east.

In the run up to the meeting, NATO's new Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg - who will be chairing the foreign ministers for the first time - accused Russia of undermining Euro-Atlantic security.

Whistleblower Edward Snowden awarded Alternative Nobel Prize

Edward Snowden has been awarded the Right Livelihood Honorary Award, often referred to as the 'Alternative Nobel Prize'.

The whistleblower, who is wanted by the United States for leaking secret documents on state surveillance programs, was awarded for his courage in revealing the "unprecedented" violation of "basic democratic processes and constitutional rights".

Mr Snowden accepted the award via video-link from Russia, where he now lives after receiving a three year residence permit in August.

GORDON BROWN TO STAND DOWN, FIGHT FOR UK TO STAY IN UK

Former British Prime Minister Gordown Brown is to stand down from Parliament, but may be setting himself up to campaign for Britain to stay in the EU.

Mr Brown says he will not fight to retain his seat at May's general election.

But he insists he will not be moving up into the UK's House of Lords.

Gordon Brown was the UK's finance minister from 1997 to 2007, then Prime Minister for three years before losing 2010's election.

He announced his decision in a speech to constituents in Scotland.
