Colombian General released by rebels

Marxist rebels in Colombia have released a General and two other captives who had been held hostage for two weeks. 

The handover of the captives, could set the stage for peace talks to resume between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, FARC, and the government.

US Supreme Court Debates Online Threats

The US Supreme Court is debating whether to make it harder to prosecute those who post threats towards others on social networking websites.

The case is being brought by a man from Pennsylvania, who posted threatening comments towards his ex-wife on Facebook, but claims he didn't intend to frighten her.

UK concerned over ban on Hong Kong visit

UK concerns are growing over clashes between police and demonstrators in Hong Kong, after China barred a committee of MPs from visiting the former colony.


The protest movement is in its second month and those involved are demonstrating against the Chinese government's plans to screen candidates for Hong Kong's leadership elections.


Beijing has accused UK ministers of interfering in internal affairs, but the British Government says the decision to stop a Foreign Affairs Committee from making a planned trop to Hong Kong is counter productive, as our UK Correspondent Natalie Powell reports…

Obama poised for Cabinet, civil rights leaders meeting post-Ferguson

US President Barack Obama is set to meet young civil rights leaders and law enforcement officials in a bid to tackle mistrust in the community, following the recent violence in Ferguson.

In what is being dubbed an effort to boost "cop- community trust" the White House is organizing a series of meetings to look at ways of bringing back trust- following nationwide protests after a white police officer was cleared of killing an unarmed black teenager.

Switzerland rejects immigration quota

Voters in Switzerland have rejected a proposed cut to net immigration after a nation-wide referendum.

76% of people voted no to measures which would have reduced the number of incoming foreigners from 80,000 to 16,000.

Hong Kong experiences worst unrest in pro-democracy protest

Police in Hong Kong have clashed with pro democracy demonstrators in the city, in some of the worst unrest experienced in the two months of protests.


40 people have been arrested and several officers were injured. Police used pepper spray, batons and water hoses to push protests back.


Demonstrators have set up camps over the past two months to protest against the Chinese government's plans to screen candidates for Hong Kong's leadership elections, which will take place win 2017.


Hong Kong's Secretary of State condemned the protest movement for escalating violence.

50k ex or "non-existent" soldiers on Iraq army payroll

An investigation into corruption has revealed the Iraq army had 50-thousand false names on its payroll...

Known as "ghost soldiers", they either no longer reported for duty or never existed.

Healthcare workers in Moscow hold massive street protests

Russian health care workers have taken to the streets of Moscow in thousands to protest controversial medical reforms.

Moldova partial election results show pro-European parties in lead

Partial election results from Moldova show that pro-European parties have a lead over those favouring closer ties with Russia. 


The election has a wider significance given Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region in March and fighting between Russian backed militants and government forces in eastern Ukraine which has killed thousands.

Officer in Ferguson Shooting Resigns From Police Force


The white police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black teen in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson Missouri, officially resigned from the city's police force. The recent decision by a grand jury not to indict Officer Darren Wilson after he shot Michael Brown sparked riots across the city, and Wilson's lawyer says he does not want to put fellow officers or the community at risk.

Nigerian president vows to track down Kano bombers

INTRO:  Nigerian authorities have confirmed that at least 102 people lost their lives in the deadly suicide bomb and shooting attack on the largest mosque in Kano in the north of the country. The authorities believe the extremist terrorist group Boko Haram is responsible for the attack, but it has not been confirmed. The attack may be in retaliation to Islamic leaders calling on civilians in Nigeria to resist attacks by the insurgents. Minority of HIV positive Americans receiving treatment

December 1st is World AIDS day - and a new report shows that less than one third of Americans suffering from HIV have their disease under control.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says HIV is an epidemic, with over one million people HIV positive in the US alone, and that number increasing by 50,000 people every year.

Shooting spree in Austin, Texas

A shooter in the state of Texas has died after firing more than 100 rounds of ammunition at buildings in the city of Austin.

No other injuries have been reported.

Police speculate it was an "anti-government attack" that may have been motivated by the heated immigration debate in the US.

Mosque bombing kills scores in Northern Nigeria

INTRO:  At least 60 people have been killed and more than 120 injured in a suicide bomb attack on a large mosque in Kano, Northern Nigeria. Authorities believe the extremist group Boko Haram is behind the attack. 45 people were killed in a similar attack in another northern city last week.
