China and US Unveil New Climate Pledges

US President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jingping have announced new pledges on cutting greenhouse gas emissions, after meeting for talks during Mr. Obama's state visit to Beijing.

The pair set a new goal of reducing US emission levels by between 26 and 28 per cent by 2025, compared with 2005 levels.

China has said its emissions will peak by 2030. Our Washington correspondent Lorna Shaddick reports.

Probe successfully lands on comet

After a 10 year chase, a robotic probe has successfully landed on the surface of a comet.

The landing is a major breakthrough in the study of comets, which may have been instrumental in the development of life in the solar system.

NATO: Russian troops cross border into Ukraine

Nato's Top Commander says the organization has seen Russian military equipment and combat troops crossing the border into Ukraine this week.

This comes amid intensified shelling in the Eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk.

US and China agree emissions goal

The US and China have agreed to an historic goal, which would see greenhouse gas emissions lowered.

President Obama promised the US would lower emissions by as much as 28% by 2025 compared with its 2005 levels.

China did not set a spacific target, but this is the first time the country, which is the world's biggest polluter set an approximate date for emissions to peak - that date being 2030.

Bank of England chief says investigation findings are disappointing

UK and US regulators have imposed a 2 billion pound / 3.1 billion dollar fine on five banks for the attempted manipulation of foreign exchange rates.

The Bank of England was accused of knowing about the scandal but doing nothing about it.

But a separate report revealed that there had been no evidence to support accusations that the Bank of England was involved in any 'unlawful or improper behaviour'

The Bank of England Chief Mark Carney said some of the findings were disappointing because the Bank holds itself to the highest standards

American troops return to troubled Iraqi province

A small contingent of US troops has returned to Anbar province in Iraq - scene of some of the fiercest fighting of the Iraq conflict.

The Pentagon says the Americans are there on a site survey as part of the US military's plan to help Iraqi forces fight the so-called Islamic State.

Dutch team unable to investigate MH17 crash site

A team of Dutch investigators say they are unable to resume work at the crash site of Malaysian airlines flight MH17 because they haven't got an access agreement with pro-Russia rebels.

Flight MH17 was shot down over rebel held territory in eastern Ukraine on July 17th, killing all 298 people on board.

UK Child Abuse review found no evidence of cover-up

A review of how the UK's Home Office handled filed alleging historic child abuse from the late 70s to late 90s has found no evidence that records were removed or destroyed.

The chief of children's charity NSPCC, Peter Wanless, was asked to investigate reports that files were removed to cover-up abuse, but his findings revealed there to be nothing to support this claim.

First-ever comet landing ready to go

UK REVEALS PAYDAY LENDING RESTRICTIONS

Payday lenders in the UK are having a cap applied to the amount they can charge customers.

It follows concerns many vulnerable people have been targeted with loans they can't afford and then unfairly punitive rates when they struggle to repay.

The Financial Conduct Authority says payday loan rates will be capped at 0.8% of the amount borrowed per day, and no one will have to pay back more than twice what they borrowed.

The measures will apply from January.

Danny Cox of stockbroker Hargreaves Lansdown says it will have a major effect on the industry.
