Obama says U.S.'s ebola response must be "more aggressive"

President Barack Obama says the U.S. must monitor the ebola crisis in a "much more aggressive way."

On Wednesday afternoon the president postponed a campaign trip to hold an emergency meeting with top health officials at the White House, where he was updated on the increasing number of ebola cases in the United States.

A second health care worker at a hospital in Dallas has contracted the virus, after treating a Thomas Eric Duncan, a patient from Liberia who later died.

In remarks following that meeting, Obama said he'd ordered the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to send teams to any new cases.

Egypt Denies Aerial Bombing of Islamists in Libya

Egypt has been conducting air strikes on militants who have taken control of key cities in Libya, according to the Associated Press.

Egypt has officially denied its involvement, despite the news agency being briefed on the strikes by two unnamed Egyptian officials.

Islamist groups have taken over the Libyan capital Tripoli and also control the second largest city, Benghazi, where the bombs struck.

The nation's Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni is confined to the port city of Tobruk as fighting continues.

US State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki didn't confirm the reports, but is discouraging  any international involvement in the factional violence.

State Department says talks continue with New Zealand over coalition role

The US State Department says discussions are continuing between the US and New Zealand over what role it will play in the international coalition fighting Islamic State militants.


A spokeswoman was responding to questions raised when the Chief of the New Zealand Defence Force, Lt. Gen. Tim Keating, attended a so-called "war summit" with President Obama in Washington on Tuesday.

Obama administration defends ISIL coalition

The Obama administration is finding it must defend its promised coalition of more than 60 nations fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

The U.S. Special Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL, retired U.S. General John Allen, just returned from a trip to Iraq, the Persian Gulf and Turkey to discuss the alliances to fight the jihadis now threatening Baghdad.

With particular questions being raised about Turkey's role, but other nations as well, Envoy Allen said talks are ongoing.

Report: 'Pentagon hid' US troops uncovering thousands of chemical weapons in Iraq

A New York Times investigation has revealed several US troops were injured following exposure to abandoned chemical weapons in Iraq.

American and Iraqi soldiers unearthed some 5000 toxic munitions between 2004 and 2011. 

The report says the Pentagon hushed up the incidents.

Second Texas health care worker diagnosed with Ebola

Health care workers at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, Texas are worried more employees will come down with Ebola, now that a second person has been diagnosed with the virus after caring for Thomas Eric Duncan.

Hospital employees are saying that Mr. Duncan's symptoms were essentially ignored for hours despite his relatives saying they suspected he had Ebola.

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins who is coordinating the response for the city says additional infections are possible.

Amid confusion over NZ role in IS coalition, Obama hails breadth of coalition

President Obama says "the world is united" in the fight against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria.


He was speaking at a meeting of defense chiefs in Washington DC that included the Chief of the New Zealand Defence Force, Lieutenant General Tim Keating.


Prime Minister John Key says the it was a "regular" meeting, and New Zealand's attendance was not intended to convey any change in the country's involvement in the battle against Islamic State militants.

Tears in court as impact of Reeva Steenkamp's death on family exposed

INTRO:  Proceedings in the sentencing hearings of Paralynpic athlete Oscar Pistorius were adjourned several times today when a family member broke down in tears as she described the family's suffering after the death of Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius has been found guilty of culpable homicide (manslaughter) for the shooting and killing Steenkamp in February last year. 

The court is hearing arguments this week in mitigation or aggravation of sentence. 

Steenkamp's cousin, Kim Martin, told the court of the day she heard her cousin had been shot by Oscar Pistorius. She broke down as she explained how a radio DJ broke the news as she and her husband drove to work ...
