Stricken US Ebola nurse "doing well"

The American nurse stricken with Ebola in Texas says she's doing well, and has thanked well-wishers for their messages.


26 year-old Nina Pham contracted Ebola when she treated Thomas Eric Duncan, the Liberian national who last week became the first person to die of the disease in the United States.

Ebola outbreak could reach 10,000 new cases per week

As nations continue to grapple with the spread of Ebola the World
Health Organization estimates that the death rate for the virus is
around 70%. A revision to their previous estimate that was around the
50% mark.

These comments came from the World Health Organization's assistant
director-general Dr. Bruce Aylward stating it is a "high mortality
disease."

Speaking at a news conference he added that "a lot more people will
die" if the world's response isn't stepped up within 60 days.

Currently there's around 1,000 new cases of Ebola per week and the UN
health organization say they're committed to isolate 70% of cases
within a two month period to reverse the outbreak.

Court told Steenkamp family rejected Pistorius "blood money"

INTRO:  Dramatic testimony of payments to the parents of Reeva Steenkamp, who was shot and killed by paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, has emerged in the sentencing phase of the trial in Pretoria. Pistorius has been found guilty of culpable homicide (manslaughter) for the death of Steenkamp. The court was told by a social worker during arguments in mitigation of sentence that Pistorius started making regular payments to the Steenkamp family about a month after he shot and killed their daughter. The state prosecutor rejected the testimony, saying that the victim's parents had rejected the payments, which they referred to as blood money. Gary Alfonso reports ...

Social workers says Pistorius will be vulnerable in prison

INTRO:   Research presented in mitigation of sentence in the trial of Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, about the state of prisons in South Africa, has been rubbished as google searches by the state prosecutor. Social worker Annette Vergeer (fur-gear) testified in mitigation of sentence in the trial of Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, who has been found guilty of culpable homicide for shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel accused the probation officer of basing her research on information obtained on the internet. 

But under cross examination, the social worker was adamant that Pistorius would not be safe in prison ...

Ebola Screening begins at Heathrow

Screening of passengers for signs of Ebola has begun at Britain's biggest airport Heathrow.

Turkey conducts airstrikes on Kurdish targets

Turkish warplanes have bombed Kurdish rebels targets in a southern province near the country's border with Iraq.

Prosecution says Pistroius not the victim and should face consequences

Catalonia referendum called off

The leader of the Spanish region of Catalonia Artur Mas says a referendum on independence cannot be held as planned, but that voting will proceed anyway.

The official process has been frozen by Spain's constitutional court which is investigating the legality of one region voting without the rest of the country.

UK BEGINS EBOLA SCREENING

London's Heathrow airport is beginning screening for Ebola of passengers traveling to the UK from at-risk countries.

People who've come from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea will be identified - although there are currently no direct flights to the UK from those countries.

Screening will be extended to Gatwick airport and the Eurostar by the end of the week.

UK officials stress a 'handful' of cases should be expected in the country by the end of the year.

Dr Peter Barlow, infectious diseases expert at Edinburgh Napier University, believes the screening is useful even if the UK is not particularly vulnerable.

British Parliament endorses Palestinian statehood

UK MPs have voted in favour of recognising Palestine as a state.

They voted 274-12, on a resolution which read, "That this House believes that the Government should recognise the state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel as a contribution to securing a negotiated two-state solution."

Thousands flee Hit, Iraq ahead of ISIS

Some 180,000 have fled the Iraqi city of Hit ahead of Islamic State militants.

Iraqi officials are also confirming the Islamic State fighters overran one of their military bases near by.

The United Nations says this latest group of refugees - expected to head toward Ramadi, will need all the basics, food, water and medical help.

Australian PM promises to confront Russia's Putin over MH17

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott is promising to confront Russian President Vladimir Putin face to face over the crash of Malaysian Airlines flight 17.

According to reports, debris from the plane is still scattered across eastern Ukraine, months after the jet was shotdown, possibly by Russian separatists.

Prime Minister Abbott said he would be blunt in his promised face-to-face conversation.
