Texas officials urge calm after new Ebola case identified

Officials in Texas are urging members of the public not to panic after a healthcare worker in Dallas tested positive for Ebola.

The worker has not been identified, but the new patient was part of the medical team treating a Liberian who last week became the first person to die of Ebola in the US.

Pistorius to face sentencing this week

Gaza reconstruction on international agenda in Cairo

Donor nations are meeting in Cairo (Oct 12th), to discuss reconstruction assistance for the Palestinians.

US, Turkey make initial deal to help fight ISIL

Malala honored to receive Nobel Peace Prize


Pakistani teen Malala Yousafzai [[ you-soff-ZYE ]] says she's honored to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize along with Indian child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi.  

Speaking from England, 17-year-old Malala said the prize helps to reinforce her message that all humans are equal.

Two years ago, Malala was shot in the head by the Taliban, but recovered from her attack and became an even stronger supporter of girls' rights to get an education. 

She thanked her family for their support.

Deadly protests in Turkey as UN warns of 'massacre' in Kobani

As US-led air strikes continue in Syria and Iraq, Islamic state fighters are thought to be shelling a Syrian border crossing with turkey to isolate the town of Kobani from Kurdish forces.

Latest police killing reignites tensions in American community

Tensions are flaring again in an American community, where the killing of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer back in August prompted weeks of unrest.

Another deadly shooting of an 18-year old in St Louis (pron: Saint Lewis) is reviving tensions between police and African-American residents.

As Malcolm Brown reports, the latest incident came ahead of several days of planned protests related to the previous shooting in nearby Ferguson, Missouri.

US ramps up airstrikes on IS targets around Kobani

Reports say that the security zone in the Syrian city of Kobani has fallen to Islamic State militants.

Ebola screening to introduced in UK after earlier being ruled out

Screening for ebola is being introduced at some UK international airports and train stations. 

That's after being ruled out earlier by authorities as, "ineffective."

The change in policy comes after advice from the Chief Medical Officer.

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev has been taken to hospital after an 'aggravation' of an unspecified illness.


However he sounded in an upbeat mood, report Russian media, and said he would fight for his recovery.

UKIP HAIL FIRST ELECTED MP

The UK Independence Party has its first elected MP at Westminster after a by-election win in Britain.

UKIP's Douglas Carswell romped home in Clacton, after defecting from the Conservative Party.

UKIP also ran the Labour Party close in another by-election in Heywood and Middleton and now set their sights on next May's general election.

The UK Independence Party's anti-EU, anti-immigration, anti-establishment message appears to be winning voters from the two traditional main parties - the Conservatives and Labour.
